Women's ice hockey plays Mercyhurst in a home-and-home series beginning Thursday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The RIT women's ice hockey team will play Mercyhurst University in a pair of CHA contests Thursday and Friday, December 10 and 11. The Tigers host the Lakers on Thursday at 3 p.m., while Friday the two teams will play at Mercyhurst at 3 p.m.

RIT OPENED 2020-21 SEASON AT SYRACUSE
RIT began the 2020-21 season with a game at Syracuse on Nov. 27. Freshman Carissa Hlywa tallied her first collegiate goal in the second period, while Tori Haywood (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic) and Justine Larkin (Ottawa, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators) each had an assist. Jessi O'Leary (Woodstock, New Brunswick/Notre Dame Hounds) got the start in net for RIT, making 27 saves.

UNPRECEDENTED SEASON
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, RIT played its latest season-opener in 18 seasons. The Tigers had not opened a campaign this late since defeating visiting Buffalo State, 7-0, on Nov. 28 to kick off the 2001-02 season during their Division III days.

ABOUT THE LAKERS
Mercyhurst, the defending CHA champions, return 16 players from last year's team that posted a 21-10-5 record. Senior captain returns for her senior season after recording 27 points on 10 goals and 17 assists last season. Summer Rae-Dobson returns after tallying 16 goals last season. K.K. Thiessen and Rachel Marmen return to lead an experienced corps of defenders. The Lakers returns two goals from last season in senior Leah Klassen and sophomore Jenna Silvonen. The Lakers enter this weekend receiving votes in this week;s USCHO Div. I women's poll.

RIT VS. MERCYHURST - THE HISTORY
Mercyhurst is 29-5 all-time versus RIT, including a 4-0 mark in 2019-20. The Tiger's last win over the Lakers was a 4-2 win on Jan. 18, 2019.

SHE'S BAAAACK
Former RIT standout Celeste Brown '15 enters her first season as the Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach after being tabbed to lead her alma mater in July. Brown was a member of RIT's 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship team before starring the next three seasons during the Tigers' move to Division I. She went on to become the first player in program history to sign a professional contract before kicking off her coaching career, which included the last three years as an assistant coach at Penn State University.
