ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Rochester Institute of Technology junior forward
Will Calverley (Scarborough, Ontario/) totaled three goals to lead the Tigers to an 8-5 victory over No. 9 Clarkson, Friday night, to open the 2020-21 campain.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- RIT built a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by senior forward Jake Hamacher (Corona, Calif./) and Calverley. Sophomore forward Elijah Gonsalves (Scarborough, Ontario/) caused a turnover in the neutral zone before Hamacher deked his way to the left post with 8:47 on the clock. Calverley took a return pass from junior forward Kobe Walker (Lloydminster, Alberta/) on a right-wing rush and scored from close range with 6:30 left in the first.
- Clarkson got on the board early in the second after freshman forward Alex Campbell intercepted a clearing pass in the RIT zone and scored at 17:03.
- The teams traded goals during an 18-second span in the closing minutes of the period. RIT junior forward Jake Joffe (Toronto, Ontario/) scored off a feed from senior forward Nick Bruce (Fall River, Nova Scotia/Johnstown Tomahawks) for a power-play tally with 1:19 on the clock before Clarkson sophomore forward Anthony Romano tallied at 1:01 to make it a 3-2 game heading into the third.
- Clarkson scored twice in the first 1:17 of the final period to take a 4-3 lead, but RIT scored five of the final six goals in the last 10 minutes of regulation to put the game out of reach.
- Gonsalves started the run off a short Hamacher feed in front with 10:01 left in the game before Calverley roofed a power-play shot from close range to put the Tigers back on top, 5-4, with 8:27 on the clock.
- Romano re-tied the game, 5-5, at 7:59, but Calverley quickly answered off a feed from senior forward Alden Dupuis (Edmonton, Alberta/) 1:44 later to put RIT back on top for good.
- Freshman forward Cody Laskosky (New Norway, Alberta/) threw a puck on the Clarkson net from the left corner to score his first goal in a Tiger sweater with 3:16 left in regulation before Dupuis sealed the game with a short-handed tally with 1:25 remaining.
GAME NOTES
- RIT earned its first victory in nine all-time meetings with Clarkson, entering the game with an 0-7-2 mark with the Golden Knights.
- Calverley's first collegiate hat-trick was the first by an RIT player since current sophomore forward Andrew Rinaldi (Pierrefonds, Quebec/) notched three goals in a 7-4 win over visiting Holy Cross (Nov. 1) last season.
- Dupuis notched his sixth career short-handed goal, which is the highest total by any current player in the nation.
