Women's basketball loses close game at Ithaca College

ITHACA, NY -- The RIT (4-8, 2-3 Liberty League) women's basketball team lost 67-63 at Ithaca College (8-3, 4-1 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from the Ben Light Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

RIT shot 40 percent from the floor on 24-of-60 shooting. The Tigers went 6-of-16 from beyond the arc, and made 9-of-14 free throws. Brooke Stanley (Minnetonka, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) led RIT with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Sabrina Wolfe (Troy, NY/Troy) (10 pts., 12 reb.) and Alyssa Juergens (Rochester, NY/Hilton) (10 pts. 13 reb.) each had double-doubles, while Kaleesha Joseph (Somerville, MA/Prospect Hill Academy Charter) finished with 15 points.

KellyAnne O'Reilly led Ithaca with 16 points. Grace Cannon tallied 14 points, while Juliana Gamboa chipped in 12 points off the bench for the Bombers who shot 33.8 percent from the floor.

Tied 34-34 at halftime, Joseph gave the Tigers a 40-39 lead on her layup off an assist from Juergens early in the third quarter. Ithaca closed the quarter on a 12-5 run to lead 51-45.

The Tigers came roaring back early in the fourth quarter with a 9-3 spurt, tying the game at 54-54 on a layup from Juergens off a nice pass from Stanley. With 5:02 remaining in regulation, O'Reilly drained a three-pointer that gave the Bombers a 57-54 lead.

Cara Volpe extended the Ithaca lead to 61-56 on her 3-pointer with 2:59 to play. RIT responded, cutting the score to 64-63 in a free throw from Wolfe with :29 seconds remaining. Gamboa made two critical free throws after the Tigers intentionally fouled to make the score 66-63. Wolfe missed a three-pointer in the last seconds, and Juergens missed her try at the buzzer.

RIT returns to action on Friday, Jan. 17, when the Tigers host Rensselaer in Liberty League action from Clark Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
