Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Mens Ice Hockey takes down No. 13 UMass-Lowell, 3-2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT freshman goalie Kolby Matthews (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Coquitlam Express) made 26 saves in his first collegiate start to backstop the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over No. 13 UMass-Lowell, Saturday, at the Polisseni Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • RIT (11-8-3) opened the scoring with 7:42 left in the first period after junior forward Jake Hamacher (Corona, CA/Dubuque Fighting Saints) set up freshman forward Caleb Moretz (Fairbanks, AK/Flin Flon Bombers) for a one-time in the slot.
  • The River Hawks answered 43 seconds later on a goal by freshman forward Andre Lee to knot the score, 1-1.
  • The teams remained tied into the third period when RIT senior forward Shawn Cameron (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Cumberland Grads) muscled his way across the front of the River Hawk crease to re-direct a shot from the right point by senior defenseman Darren Brady (Lake Orion, MI/New Jersey Titans) into the goal with 8:28 on the clock.
  • The Tigers took a 3-1 lead with 3:01 remaining after freshman forward Andrew Rinaldi (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Wellington Dukes) cashed in a nice feed from junior forward Bryson Traptow (Calgary, Alberta/Camrose Kodiaks) to cap a left wing rush.
  • Following an RIT hooking penalty with 2:10 on the clock, UMass-Lowell pulled its goalie and converted the ensuing 6-on-4 opportunity on a goal by freshman forward Carl Berglund with 37 seconds left in regulation.

GAME NOTES

  • Cameron and Rinaldi moved into a three-way tie with sophomore forward Will Calverley (Scarborough, Ontario/Chilliwack Chiefs) for the team lead with their ninth goals of the season.
  • RIT edged UMass-Lowell in shots, 30-28.
  • Matthews' night included 10 saves in the first period as well as nine in the third period.
