KEUKA PARK, NY -- The RIT (1-1-1) men's soccer team tied Keuka College (0-2-1) 1-1 Wednesday evening under the lights at the Johnson Community Athletic Complex.
Nate Verso (Souderton, PA/Souderton Area) tied the game with his goal in the 89th minute.
Shots were 23-6 RIT, including eight shots on target for the Tigers. Corner Kicks were 8-0 in favor of RIT. Sophomore goalkeeper,
Spencer Raymond-Smith (Stow, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) played the entire second half and each overtime to earn the tie for the Tigers. Stephen Cowulich played all 110 minutes in net for the Wolves, making seven saves.
RIT generated some good scoring chances in the first half, including one from
Tyler Hatch (Concord, NH/Tilton School) in the 11th minute off a pass from
Nick Simone (Hilton, NY/Hilton). Cowulich came off his line and snagged the ball before Hatch could chip the ball past a sprawling keeper and into the net. With 23 minutes to play in the first half,
Josh Price (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had a chance on a low shot through traffic that Cowulich saw and made the stop.
Inside the last minute of play, RIT made a defensive miscue on a clearing attempt. The ball came directly to a Wolves forward who drove straight to the goal. RIT fouled inside the box, leading to a Keuka penalty kick, which Joshua Card converted to give the Wolves a 1-0 halftime lead.
Late in the second half, Simone had two good looks at net for RIT. His first was saved off the line by a Keuka defender, while the other was deflected in front of the net. Hatch had a chance at the rebound, but his shot was caromed out of play by the Wolves defense.
RIT kept attacking, kept challenging the Keuka defense. The Tigers finally broke through with 1:57 remaining in regulation. Simone got control of the ball on the flank. He dribbled his way free and sent in a pass that Verso got on the other end of and scored, tying the game in the 89th minute. The Tigers fired six shots in overtime, three in each period.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at home versus No. 4 The University of Rochester for the eighth annual Hillside Community Shield. Kick-off for the local Derby is 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
