Men's soccer loses to Rochester in Hillside Community Shield

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (1-2-1) men's soccer team was defeated by the University of Rochester (2-2-0) 1-0 on a sun-drenched Tuesday afternoon in the eighth annual Hillside Community Shield. Caden Dowd tallied the game-winner in the 28th minute for the Yellowjackets.

Shots were 13-8 in favor of Rochester. Each team had three corner kicks. Will Sokol (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) took the loss in net for RIT, making two saves. Hugh Curran got the win for the Yellowjackets, making five saves.

Rochester took a 1-0 lead on Caden's goal off a free kick in the first half. Mitch Volis sent in a service that was deflected to Caden, who settled and fired a low shot into the net.

Nick Simone (Hilton, NY/Hilton) fired a shot on target, but right at Curran, while Nate Verso (Souderton, PA/Souderton Area) had the Tigers first shot on target in the third minute.

Freshman Josh Price (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had a chance in the 81st minute when he drove towards the end-line and fired a hard shot from a tough angle that Curran saved.

Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) had two good chances in the second half. His first came in the 69th minute when he drove into the Rochester box and fired a low shot that Curran gobbled up. His second came in the 84th minute. His shot from 20 yards out hit off the cross bar and down. The shot appeared to cross the line, but the linesman on the sideline waved the goal off.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 14, at SUNY Oswego. Kick-off in Oswego, N.Y. is 4 p.m.
