Women's soccer loses to No. 4 William Smith in Liberty League opener

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (4-3-0, 0-1-0 Liberty League) women's soccer team was defeated 2-0 by No. 4 William Smith College (5-1-1, 1-0-0 Liberty League) in the Liberty League opener Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

Shots were 19-6 in favor of Williams Smith. Corner Kicks were 10-1 in favor of the Herons. Alyssa Salls (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) took the loss in net for the Tigers, making eight saves. Amanda Kesler got the win for William Smith, making two saves.

Grace Gillian gave William Smith an early lead, scoring in the 18th minute. Sheila McQuillen gave the Herons a 2-0 lead on her goal off an assist from Merilyn Hinrichs in the 39th minute.

RIT's best first-half scoring chance came on a free kick from Abbey Saia (Monroe, CT/Masuk) midway through the opening half. She fired a shot from just outside the William Smith penalty box that Kesler gobbled up for the save.

The Tigers continued to battle in the second half, generating some good chances late in the half. Saia had a chance in the 67th minute, but her shot from the top of the Herons penalty box was just wide of the post. Christine Cataldo-Smith (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) had a chance in the 80th minute that was saved by Kesler, and Madison Corso (Honolulu, HI/Kaiser) had a header in the 82nd minute that just missed the William Smith net.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when the Tigers play at Liberty League rival Clarkson University. Kick-off in Potsdam, NY is 1 p.m.
