ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (2-2-0) women's soccer team was defeated, 2-0 by SUNY Geneseo (4-1-0) on the grass at Tiger Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
Geneso held a slight 17-16 shot advantage. The Tigers fired 10 shots on target and took four corner kicks to six for the Knights.
Alyssa Salls (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) took the loss in net for RIT, making 10 saves. Julia McDonald picked up the win for SUNY Geneseo, making 10 saves.
RIT had a very good chance in the 15th minute when
Christine Cataldo-Smith (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) sent a ball through to
Piper Zimmerman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) on the right flank. Zimmerman drove into the Geneseo penalty box and fired a shot that McDonald saved.
Madison Corso (Honolulu, HI/Kaiser) was there for the rebound, but McDonald made the quick reaction and dove on the shot to keep it a scoreless game.
Cataldo-Smith and
Mia White (Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School) broke in 2-v-1 off of a Geneseo defensive miscue in the 25th minute. White fed Cataldo-Smith, but her shot was just wide of the Geneseo net.
The Knights best chance in the first half came in the 39th minute when Faye Higgins found herself open in the RIT penalty box. Her shot from in close whistled wide of the RIT net to keep it scoreless at halftime.
Maggie Hoey (Charlotte, NC/Lincoln Charter School) had a good look at goal for RIT in the 57th minute on a pass from Corso. Her shot from 15 yards was saved by McDonald.
The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute on a goal from Hannah Sullivan. She took a pass from Domenica Piccoli and scored on a shot from 15 yards out into the bottom left corner.
With time running out in regulation, Cataldo-Smith had a chance off a feed from Corso, but McDonald was there to make the save.
Sullivan broke in alone and scored with time running out in regulation to make it a 2-0 final.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 17, when the Tigers host SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
