SCRANTON, PA -- The RIT (1-1) women's volleyball team was defeated 3-2 to the University of Scranton on Saturday morning as day two began at the University of Scranton Invitational. Scores were 14-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 14-16.
The Tigers lost set one 25-14, but rallied to win the second set 25-23. Scranton won the third set, 25-23, but RIT rallied late in the fourth set to win 25-23. In the deciding set, RIT once again rallied late in the set, tying the score at 14-14 before falling 16-14.
Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led RIT with 17 kills and nine digs.
Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) had six kills, while Joelle Marsten finished with five kills.
Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led the Tigers with 28 digs, Higgins had 19 and Hobler tallied 12 digs.
Brianna Ellis (Wayne, PA/Radnor) handed out 27 assists, 11 digs and two solo blocks.
"Scranton did a great job of making us uncomfortable," said RIT head coach
Jim Lodes. "We had moments where it looked like we were going to settle in. Unfortunately, that rhythm we were seeking didn't stay. We are hopeful that we will learn from this."
RIT will face SUNY New Paltz at 3 p.m. in its final match at the 2019 University of Scranton Invitational.
