Women's Volleyball beats SUNY New Paltz 3-1 at Scranton Invitational

SCRANTON, PA -- The RIT(2-1) women's volleyball team defeated SUNY New Paltz 3-1 Saturday afternoon at the 2019 University of Scranton Invitational. Scores were 23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21. Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) and Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) were All-Tournament Team selections.

Hobler led the Tigers offensively with 22 kills. Higgins added 11 kills, while Kelly Waters (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) tallied 10 kills. Sasha Mekker (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) handed out a career-high 37 assists and had five digs. Taylor led the Tigers with 20 digs, while Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) finished with 16 digs. Hobler and Paige Daly (Allison Park, PA/Hampton) each had 14 digs. Hobler and Kelly Waters (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) each had two solo blocks.

"We are still establishing our identity and consistency but eventually settled in during this match," said RIT head coach Jim Lodes. "To go 2-1 on a tough opening weekend is a really good start for the season."

RIT returns to action next weekend when the Tigers host the RIT Invitational. Play begins on Friday, Sept. 6, against SUNY Canton at 4 p.m. and St. John Fisher College at 6 p.m.
