Women's volleyball goes 1-1 on Friday at RIT Invitational

Tigers beat SUNY Canton and lose to St. John Fisher

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (3-2) women's volleyball team posted a 1-1 record on day one of the 31st Annual RIT Invitational Friday at Clark Gym. The Tigers defeated SUNY Canton, 3-2 (23-25, 25-12, 25-17, 23-25, 15-8), and were defeated by St. John Fisher College in three sets (21-25, 15-25, 12-25).

Versus SUNY Canton, the duo of Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) and Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) each had a double-double. Higgins finished with 22 kills and 14 digs, while Hobler tallied 16 kills and 12 digs. Joelle Marston (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) chipped in six kills, while Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) had 19 digs. Sasha Mekker (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) led the Tigers with 31 assists and added five service aces. Calista Gasper (Sarver, PA/Freeport) had four assisted blocks.

"We had stretches where we played well and had many players contribute in those stretches," said RIT head coach Jim Lodes. "As we continue to establish this team's identity, our level of play and consistency will rise."

Melissa McMaster led SUNY Canton with eight kills, and Marissa Ixtlahuac had six kills. Jenna Roat led the Roos with 29 digs, and Tatum LaFrance handed out 15 assists for the Roos.

In the night cap versus St. John Fisher, Hobler led RIT with 13 kills and 10 digs. Higgins added six kills and seven digs, while Mekker handed out 11 assists.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 7, versus SUNY Poly at 11 a.m., followed by a match against Capital University at 1 p.m.
