WHEATON, IL – The RIT (1-0-0) women's soccer team began the 2019 season in fine fashion with a convincing 2-0 win over Hanover College (0-1-0) at the 2019 Bob Baptista Invitational Soccer Tournaments hosted by Wheaton College.
Lauren Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and
Christine Cataldo-Smith (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) each scored for the Tigers, while
Corinne Amato (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) had an assist.
Shots were 15-3 in favor of the Tigers, including nine shots on target for RIT. The Tigers took 11 corner kicks to just three for the Panthers.
Alyssa Salls (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) got the win in net for RIT, making two saves for her first shut out of the season. Amanda Carmosino took the loss in net for Hanover making six saves.
RIT took a 1-0 lead on Zeglen's first goal of the season in the 12th minute. She made a driving run down the left flank and fired a low pass intended for
Kayla Grossman (Sewell, NJ/Clearview Regional) in the center of the pitch. Grossman narrowly missed the pass, which crept through and passed a diving Camariso into the net.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead on Cataldo-Smith's first collegiate goal in the 41st minute. She scored on a header off a long pass from
Corinne Amato (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) that gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead just before halftime. It was Amato's first collegiate point.
RIT's defense proved to be stout, allowing Hanover just three total shots, including two on target. RIT returns to action on Saturday, Aug. 31 against Wheaton College at 3:30 p.m.
