ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (1-0-0) men's soccer team began the season with a 3-2 win over The College at Brockport (0-1-0) on night one of the 2019 Doug May Memorial Soccer Tournament. Senior co-captain
Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) tallied the game winner for RIT in the 73rd minute.
Shots were 13-9 in favor of RIT, including seven on target for the Tigers. Brockport took five corner kicks to two for RIT.
Will Sokol (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) got the win in net for RIT, making five saves. Tautis Poniskaitis took the loss for the Golden Eagles, making four saves.
Garno and
Nick Simone (Hilton, NY/Hilton) led the Tigers with a goal and an assist each.
Jared Short (Grafton, WI/Cedarburg) scored, while
Mark-Vincent Sansone (Hilton, NY/Aquinas Institute) had an assist. Matthew Stefaniw and Jeff Hibbard each scored for Brockport.
Simone gave RIT a 1-0 lead on his goal in the fifth minute. Garno sent a ball into the Brockport penalty area that Simone ran onto and tucked into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
Brockport answered back on Stefaniw's goal in the eighth minute. He scored on a loose ball in front of the RIT goal off a Golden Eagle's free kick. Hibbard converted a penalty kick in the 25th minute that gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Just before halftime, RIT equalized on a
Jared Short (Grafton, WI/Cedarburg) goal in the 41st minute. Simone sent a free kick into the Brockport box that Short leaped over his defender and scored on a header.
RIT took the lead on Garno's goal in the 73rd minute. Sansone and Garno worked the give-and-go to perfection. Garno fed Sansone, who slid a pass back to Garno, who continued his run. He scored on a one-time shot to give the Tigers the lead.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, September 1, versus Buffalo State College for night two of the 2019 Doug May Memorial Tournament.
