POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (12-5, 5-3 Liberty League) ended the 2018-19 regular season with a 9-0 loss at Liberty League rival Vassar College (13-6, 7-1 Liberty League) from Josselyn Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon. RIT will be the fourth seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament.
Vassar took all three doubles matches in hotly contested fashion. At third doubles, Vassar's Morgane Flournoy and Ashley Fair outlasted RIT's
Annie Steinbrink (Upper Dublin, PA/Upper Dublin) and
Claire Casalnova (Mars, PA/Pine Richland) in a match that went to the tie-breaker. With the match even at 7-7, Flournoy and Fair earned the decisive point with a 7-4 win in the tie-breaker.
The Brewers took all six singles matches. At fourth singles,
Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Melina Stavropoulos went to three sets. Stavropoulos won the first set, 6-2, while Zablonski came back to earn a 7-6 win in set two. Vassar's Stavropoulos would win the match with a 10-7 victory in the third and decisive set.
RIT will take on No. 5 seed St. Lawrence on Friday, May 3 in the opening round of the Liberty League Tournament from the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca. The Tigers earned a 5-4 win over the Saints on April 20.
