CANTON, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (11-4, 4-2 Liberty League) clinched a postseason berth with a dramatic, 5-4 win over Liberty League rival St. Lawrence University (8-6, 3-3 Liberty League) from Newell Field House Saturday.
RIT trailed 4-2 in the match before winning the final three matches to earn the victory.
Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Maddie Nasch at fourth singles, before
Claire Casalnova (Mars, PA/Pine Richland) won in three sets over Carly Jefferson at fifth singles. Casalnova lost the opening set, 6-4, before roaring back to win set two, 6-2 and the third and decisive set, 6-3.
With the match on the line, freshman
Kirsten Auble (Portland, OR/Sunset) continued her tremendous first season, earning a three-set win over Marie Bank. Auble took the first set, 6-2 before Bank rallied to win set two, 7-5. Auble found another gear in the final set and rolled to a 6-2 win for her 16th singles win of 2018-19.
RIT opened the match by winning two of three doubles points.
Anne Taylor (Beaver, PA/Beaver) and Zablonski recorded a decisive 8-1 win over Christian Ryan and Grace van Tartwijk at first doubles. RIT's second doubles duo of
Amelia Ying (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and
Shayna Ginster (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) earned an 8-2 win over Jefferson and Nasch.
RIT's 11 dual wins are now the fourth most in one season in program history.
The Tigers are back in action with a home match versus Bard College at noon on Saturday, April 27 from RIT Tennis Courts. RIT wraps up the regular season the following day at Vassar College.
