ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (6-8, 4-5 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team defeated the University of Rochester (5-8, 2-6 Liberty League), 11-7 in a critical Liberty League contest Wednesday afternoon from Fauver Stadium. The Tigers moved into fifth place in the Liberty League standings with the win.
Shots were 28-24 in favor of the Yellowjackets. The Tigers grabbed 17 ground balls and won eight draw controls. RIT scored two free position goals, and were 15-of-20 on clearing attempts.
Steph Darrell (East Norhtport, NY/St. Anthony's) led RIT with five points on two goals and three assists.
Alanna Fallone (Penfield, NY/Penfield) scored three goals, while
Meghan Donahue (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) and
Krystyna Sterio (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each scored two goals.
Paulina Goodermote (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) got the win in net, making 17 saves.
Mary Panepento and Jamison Seabury each scored three goals for Rochester. Carlie Bendavid took the loss in net for the Yellowjackets, making seven saves.
RIT jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on goals from Sterio, Fallone and
Colette Rigas (Marietta, NY/Marcellus). After a pair of Rochester goals pulled the Yellowjackets to within 3-2, the Tigers closed out the half on a three-goal spurt to lead 6-2 at halftime. Donahue gave RIT a 4-2 lead on her goal off an assist from Darrell at the 13:15 mark of the half. Fallone tallied two straight goals to close the half to give the Tigers a four-goal halftime lead.
Seabury cut the RIT lead to 6-3 on her goal early in the second half. Donahue gave the Tigers a 7-3 lead on her goal off an assist from Sterio. After a Rochester goal cut the RIT lead to 7-4, the Tigers ran off three straight goals, taking a 10-4 lead on Darrell's free position goal with 17:21 to play.
Seabury cut the Tigers lead to 10-6 on her goal with 5:19 remaining. Sterio sealed the win with her goal with 1:03 to play to give RIT a 11-6 lead. Panepento tallied a late goal for Rochester to make it an 11-7 final.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, April 23 when the Tigers host Nazareth College at 4 p.m. on RIT's Turf Field.
