ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (5-2, 1-1 Liberty League) got back in the win column by defeating Liberty League foe Union College (2-3, 1-3 Liberty League), 6-3 in a tight match from the Midtown Athletic Club Saturday afternoon.
RIT won two of three doubles matches. At second doubles,
Amelia Ying (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and
Shayna Ginster (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) earned an 8-3 win over Megan Brown and Cathy Xing, while
Annie Steinbrink (Upper Dublin, PA/Upper Dublin) and
Claire Casalnova (Mars, PA/Pine Richland) picked up an 8-4 victory over Samantha Siegel and Alex Greenberg at third doubles. The opening doubles match went to a tiebreaker, before Union's Tal Pezzuco and Paige Webster won 7-5 in the extra session to earn a wild 8-7 victory over
Anne Taylor (Beaver, PA/Beaver) and
Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park).
Zablonski and Ginster gave RIT a 4-1 lead in the match by winning at fourth and third singles, respectively. Zablonski defeated Siegel, 6-3, 6-3, while Ginster topped Webster, 6-3, 6-4.
Union would fight back, winning at first and second singles to cut the RIT lead to 4-3. RIT would respond, as Casalnova recorded the key point at fifth singles to clinch the match, defeating Xing, 6-2, 6-1.
Kirsten Auble (Portland, OR/Sunset) defeated Greenberg, 6-4, 6-3 at sixth singles to close out the match.
RIT is right back in action on Sunday with a match at William Smith College that gets underway at 11 a.m.
