GENEVA, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (5-3, 1-2 Liberty League) lost a heartbreaker on the road at Liberty League foe William Smith College (1-1, 0-1 Liberty League), 5-4 from Bristol Field House Sunday afternoon.
With the match tied at 4-4, first singles took center stage, as RIT's
Amelia Ying (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and William Smith's Allie Perron battled for the decisive point. Ying won the first set, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker), before Perron took set two, 6-1. Perron would jump out to the early lead in set three on her way to a 6-2 win.
William Smith won two of three doubles matches top open an early 2-1 lead. RIT's first doubles team of
Anne Taylor (Beaver, PA/Beaver) and
Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) rolled to an 8-1 win over Maggie Bonomo and Dina Rigas. At second doubles, Ying and
Shayna Ginster (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) battled Kate Foley and Perron to the wire, before losing 8-7 (8-6 tiebreaker).
Zablonski won 6-0, 6-0 over Charlotte Engebrecht at fourth singles to even the match before William Smith regained a 4-2 lead with victories at third and fifth singles.
Anne Taylor (Beaver, PA/Beaver) defeated Bonomo at second singles, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 and
Kirsten Auble (Portland, OR/Sunset) evened the match at 4-4 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Leland Barclay at sixth singles.
RIT is off until March 23, when they head to Liberty League foe Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for a match at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 23.
