GENESEO, NY -- The No. 3 RIT (8-1) men's lacrosse team outscored SUNY Geneseo (3-6) 9-3 in the second half en route to a 14-5 win over the Knights at College Stadium Wednesday evening.
Leading 5-2 at halftime, the Tigers controlled much of the second half, outscoring the Knights 9-3, including two four-goal runs.
Shawn Nally (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) led the Tigers with four goals and six points.
Ryan Barnable (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) and
Adam Wolf (Oakville, Ontario/Everest Academy) each had two goals and two assists and
Cam Isaac (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) scored a pair of goals.
Dawson Tait (Ottawa, Ontario/Mother Teresa) and
Ryan Tandy (Montrose, NY/Hendrick-Hudson) each had a goal and two assists.
Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) improved to 8-1 in net this season, making nine saves.
Nick Montemorano (Victor, NY/Victor) won 12-of-16 face-offs, while
Chandler Allen (Ilderon, Ontario/Medway) led the Tigers with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Patrick Shoemay (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross) had three caused turnovers and grabbed three ground balls.
RIT jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Goals from Tandy, Nally and Tait gave the Tigers a three-goal lead after 15 minutes. Wolf gave RIT a 4-0 lead on his goal off an assist from Tandy with 9:26 to play in the first half.
Geneseo answered back with two straight goals, cutting the Tigers lead to 4-2 on a goal from Jake Steffen with 5:03 to play in the half. RIT got the last possession, and off a timeout, Nally scored with seven seconds to play to give the Tigers a 5-2 halftime lead.
Chris Martello cut the RIT lead to 5-3 on his goal early in the third quarter, scoring off an assist from Kevin Cook at the 12:02 mark of the quarter. The Tigers began to control play, running off four straight goals. RIT took a 6-3 lead on a Barnable goal off a pretty feed from Tait. Isaac scored on the Tigers next possession to give RIT a 7-3 lead with 9:08 to play off an assist from Nally. Nally tallied off a feed from Tait, and Damon Currie scored on another pass from Tait, as RIT stretched its lead to 9-3.
Matt Malone broke the Tigers run with his man-up goal with 2:52 to play in the third quarter. Wolf scored his second of the game with 1:52 to play to give the Tigers a 10-4 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Steffen tallied his second of the game early in the fourth quarter for the Knights that cut the RIT lead to 10-5. The Tigers closed out the game on a four-goal run to win 14-5. Barnable, Isaac, Nally and
Trevor Smyth (Orangeville, Ontario/The Kiski School) each scored for the Tigers in the final run to put the game away.
Shots were 55-24 in favor of RIT, who won the the ground ball battle 58-25. The Tigers won 18-of-23 face-offs, went 17-of-21 on clearing attempts and were 1-of-2 on man-up. Geneseo goalkeeper Tyler Wetzel made 21 saves.
RIT returns to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 30 at Liberty League foe Bard College.
