Men's lacrosse improves to 2-0 in Liberty League play with win over Vassar College

Tigers end game by scoring final 14 goals for season-high output

ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 4 RIT (7-1, 2-0 Liberty League) men's lacrosse team defeated Vassar College (2-6, 0-2 Liberty League) 24-7 in Liberty League action from chilly RIT Turf Field Saturday afternoon. The Tigers scored 14 straight goals to end the game and held the Brewers to three goals in the final three quarters, including just one second-half tally.

RIT led 5-4 after the first quarter, and 10-6 at halftime. The Tigers outscored Vassar 8-1 in the third quarter, and 6-0 in the fourth quarter to win, 24-7. Cam Isaac (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) led the Tigers with five goals and six points. Shawn Nally (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) finished with three goals and an assist to reach the 100-point career plateau, while Ryan Tandy (Montrose, NY/Hendrick-Hudson) finished with two goals and two assists. Trevor Smyth (Orangeville, Ontario/The Kiski School), Matt Wiechers (Waterloo, Ontario/The Kiski School) and Ryan Rosenblum (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) each scored two goals for the Tigers, while Dawson Tait (Ottawa, Ontario/Mother Teresa), Damon Currie and Ryan Barnable (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) each tallied a goal and an assist.

Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) improved to 7-1 on the season, making 11 saves, Holden McDonald (Toronto, Ontatrio/St. Mary Catholic) played the fourth quarter, making five stops. Nick Montemorano (Victor, NY/Victor) won nine face-offs, while Smyth and Patrick Shoemay (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross) had five ground balls apiece. Matt Pogue (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Paul Secondary) led the Tigers with six ground balls, while Chandler Allen (Ilderon, Ontario/Medway) caused three turnovers.

Spencer Duryee led Vassar with two goals, and Connor Deehan tallied a goal and an assist. Erik Mikelinich took the loss in net for the Brewers, making three saves.

Goals from Currie and Rosenblum gave RIT an early 2-0 lead. The Brewers answered with two straight goals, tying the score at 2-2 on a goal from Dekker Stebel at the 8:05 mark of the quarter. RIT ran off three straight goals, taking a 5-2 lead on a goal from Barnable at the 4:19 mark. Duryee scored two straight for the Brewers, cutting the RIT lead to 5-4 on his goal with four seconds to play in the first quarter.

Deehan tied the game at 5-5 early in the second quarter on his goal at the 13:41 mark. The Tigers responded with a five-goal run, taking a 10-5 lead on a Tandy goal with 2:23 to play in the half. Isaac and Nally each scored twice for the Tigers in the run, Austin Mello tallied with 34 seconds to play to cut the RIT lead to 10-6 at halftime.

Logan Hyde scored the Brewers lone goal of the second half, scoring at the 12:29 mark of the third quarter that cut the Tigers lead to 10-7. The Tigers ran off eight straight goals to end the third quarter leading 18-7. Isaac scored three times in the quarter, while Tait, Pogue, Allen and Smyth each scored in the quarter.

Spencer Bell (Fairport, NY/Fairport), Luke Henderson (Hespeler, Ontario/St. Benedict's Catholic), Wiechers (two goals) and Luke Smeltzer (Halifax, Nova Scotia/The Gunnery) each scored for RIT in the fourth quarter. Henderson tallied a goal and an assist in the quarter.

Shots were 47-33 in favor of RIT who won the ground ball battle, 50-40. Vassar won 20-of-34 draws, while RIT went 24-of-28 on clears and went 2-of-4 on man-up chances.

The Tigers return to action on Wednersday, March 27 when the Tigers take on SUNY Geneseo at 7 p.m. in Geneseo, N.Y.
