FORT MYERS, FL – The RIT softball team (4-4) split a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Wednesday afternoon. RIT lost the opener against the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford (4-4) by a score of 6-2 but rebounded to the University of St. Joseph (4-2), 7-3.
In the opener against Pitt-Bradford, RIT scored once in the bottom of the first inning and once in the fourth to lead 2-0. Pitt-Bradford would explode for six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead and hold on. The first four runs for Pitt-Bradford came on two wild pitches and an error.
Both teams had 10 hits in the opener.
Raquel Estrada (Middletown, NY/Middletown) went 3-for-4 with a run-scoring double.
Danielle Hotz (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) finished 2-for-4 with a run batted in, while
Olivia Doret (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Abcde Cortinas (San Antonio, TX/Highlands) made the start on the mound, giving up six hits and two runs in four innings.
Torie Adler (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) came on in relief, allowing one earned run over the final three innings, but took the loss.
In game two versus St. Joseph, RIT jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning and led 6-0 after five innings.
Jennifer Vickery (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) was 3-for-4 with a single, double, triple, two runs scored and a RBI. Estrada was 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI, while
Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva) reached base three times and scored twice. Doret and
Madisen Baldwin (Washougal, WA/Washougal) also drove in runs for the Tigers.
Cortinas picked up the win on the mound, throwing four scoreless innings. After St. Joseph cut the RIT lead to 6-3, Adler came on in relief to pick up the save.
RIT is right back in action on Thursday with a pair of games against Wilmington College at 11 a.m. and SUNY Canton at 1 p.m. from North Collier Regional Park.
