NAPLES, FL – The RIT softball team (4-6) dropped both ends of a doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Thursday. RIT lost 1-0 to Wilmington College (7-2) in the opener before falling to SUNY Canton (2-6) by a score of 6-5 in the second contest.
Versus Wilmington, the game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Micalah Hensley led off with a single, move to third on a bunt single by Kennedy Clifton and an error, before crossing the plate on a walk-off single by Megan Crager.
Both teams had seven hits in the opener.
Jennifer Vickery (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) was the lone Tigers to have two hits, while adding a walk.
Madisen Baldwin (Washougal, WA/Washougal) doubled and walked twice, while
Danielle Hotz (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) also doubled.
RIT loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning and did the same with one out in the fourth inning, but were unable to score. The Tigers also had runners on first and third with nobody out in the fifth inning.
Torie Adler (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) threw the first two innings, allowing two hits and three walks in two innings.
Abcde Cortinas (San Antonio, TX/Highlands), allowed just five hits and an unearned run over 4 1/3 innings in relief, but took the tough loss.
In game two versus SUNY Canton, RIT trailed 3-0 before roaring back with three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to lead 5-3. Canton would answer right back with three runs in the top of the seventh inning, all with two outs, to regain the lead, 6-5 and hang on.
RIT out-hit SUNY Canton, 10-7.
Sarah Thayer (Tully, NY/Fabius-Pompey) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in.
Hannah Trumble (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) was 2-for-2 with a run scored, RBI and a walk.
Olivia Doret (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) and
Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva) were both 2-for-4.
Brianna Bilich (Penryn, CA/Del Oro) also drove in a run for the Tigers.
Adler got the start on the mound, allowing four hits and three runs over three innings. Cortinas was rolling in relief, not allowing a run over her first 3 2/3 innings, before giving up the three runs with two outs in the seventh.
RIT wraps up play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Friday versus Crown College at 9 a.m. and New Jersey City University at 11 a.m. from North Collier Regional Park Field 5.
