FORT MYERS, FL – For the third consecutive day, the RIT softball team (3-3) split a pair of games from the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Monday. RIT opened the day with a 3-1 win over Curry College (2-1) and lost 6-1 to Rockford College (4-4).
RIT would rally from an early 1-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and one more in the fifth.
Jill Vorreiter (Fisherville, KY/Mercy Academy of Louisville) would get RIT on the board with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning. Later in the frame,
Hannah Trumble (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) would draw a bases loaded walk to score
Jennifer Vickery (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville).
Laura Weintraub (Syosset, NY/Syosset) would single in
Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva) with a key insurance run in the fifth inning.
Madisen Baldwin (Washougal, WA/Washougal) and
Sarah Thayer (Tully, NY/Fabius-Pompey) also had singles for RIT.
Abcde Cortinas (San Antonio, TX/Highlands) got the start on the mound, going the first 1 2/3 innings.
Torie Adler (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) would come on in relief and pitch 2 1/3 innings, allowing a run on one hit, while walking three batters. She would be awarded the win. Cortinas would re-enter and pitch the final three innings to pick up the save. Overall, Cortinas fired 4 2/3 innings of scoreless ball.
In game two, RIT would jump out to the quick 1-0 lead, as Vickery led off with single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and error. Vickery and Weintraub would execute the perfect double steal, with Vickery crossing home plate for the run.
Rockford pitcher Rylee Klema would shut RIT down from there, scattering eight total hits. Dylan King and Sammi Russell drove in two runs each for Rockford.
RIT out-hit Rockford, 8-4, but left five runners on base.
Adler started on the mound and suffered her first loss of the season, allowing three runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Melissa Gould (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) and Cortinas came on in relief.
RIT is back in action on Wednesday with a pair of games. RIT takes on the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford at 3 p.m. and University of Saint Joseph at 5 p.m. from Century Link Sports Complex Field #2
