ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (16-6, 11-4 Liberty League) women's basketball team defeated Skidmore College (7-16, 6-10 Liberty League) 71-48 on Senior Day at Clark Gym Saturday. RIT honored seniors
Tara Lynch (Green Township, NJ/Newton) and
Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy) prior to the game. The Tigers have now won eight straight games and clinched a Liberty League postseason berth.
RIT shot 47.6 percent from the floor on 30-of-63 shooting and made 9-of-12 from the foul line. Lynch led all scorers with a career-high total of 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting.
Sabrina Wolfe (Troy, NY/Troy) tallied 12 points and had five rebounds, while
Alyssa Juergens (Rochester, NY/Hilton) chipped in 10 points and six rebounds. Okada, Lynch, Wolfe and
Brooke Stanley (Minnetonka, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) added four steals apiece, as RIT's stout defense caused 28 Skidmore turnovers.
"We played with a lot of energy defensively in the second half, and that propelled our offense," said RIT head coach
Amy Reed.
Sydney Tsutsui led Skidmore with 15 points, while Taylor Ong added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Thoroughbreds, who shot 34.5 percent from the floor.
RIT led 16-11 after the first quarter, and 29-22 at halftime. Lynch led RIT with eight points, while
Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy),
Brooke Stanley (Minnetonka, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) and Juergens each scored six points.
The Tigers broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Skidmore 23-10. Leading 35-27, the Tigers used a decisive 17-0 run over a span 6:50 stretch in the quarter to pull away. RIT tacked on 19 points in the fourth quarter to win by 23 points.
RIT has won all eight games during the winning streak by double-digits. The Tigers are now just a game behind Ithaca and two behind Vassar with three to play.
Lynch and Okada have helped RIT win 78 games in four seasons, lead RIT to its first Liberty League title in 2017 and first two NCAA Tournament berths in 2017 and 2018. RIT won a program-record 23 games last season and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16.
"I can't say enough about Tara and Cori," said Reed. "They have been such an integral part of our success and I can't wait to make another run at a Liberty League title with them."
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 12 when the Tigers host Clarkson University at 3 p.m. in the floor of Clark Gymnasium. That game was originally scheduled to be played Jan. 19, but was postponed due to weather.
