ROCHESTER, NY – Kobe Walker (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Bobcats) and
Erik Brown (Keene, Ontario/Kemptville 73's) scored third period goals to help the RIT men's hockey team (15-13-4, 13-9-4 AHA) rally from a 2-0 deficit and earn a 2-2 tie against Robert Morris University (10-20-2, 9-15-2 AHA) in front of 2,705 fans at the Gene Polisseni Center Saturday night.
Walker made it 2-1 Colonials with 14:06 remaining in regulation, driving to the net and one-timing a perfect feed from
Nick Bruce (Fall River, Nova Scotia/Johnstown Tomahawks) past goaltender Francis Marotte for his second goal in two nights and fourth of the season.
Dan Willett (Bayville, NY/Bloomington Thunder) also assisted on the goal.
RIT kept pushing and with 5:04 remaining in regulation, Brown was parked in front of Marotte and redirected a cross-ice pass from
Adam Brubacher (Elmira, Ontario/Powell River Kings) for his third power-play goal of the weekend and 16th tally of the year to tie the game at 2-2.
Jake Hamacher (Corona, CA/Dubuque Fighting Saints) drew the secondary assist on Brown's goal.
RIT, who was whistled for just one minor over the first 57 minutes of regulation had to kill off a key penalty in the final two minutes . RIT goaltender
Logan Drackett (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) made three big saves, first on Eric Israel, which also deflected off the post, then one from the slot on Alex Tonge and finally on a great chance from Daniel Mantenuto.
In overtime, Brown just missed ending it for the Tigers, sliding the puck barely wide on a wrap around attempt.
Aidan Spellacy and Justin Addamo scored first period goals to give the Colonials an early 2-0 lead. Marotte made 35 saves in net for Robert Morris.
Drackett, who allowed two goals on Robert Morris' five shots of the game, settled in to finish with 22 saves on the night. He made several key saves to keep RIT in the game throughout the final two periods.
RIT out-shot Robert Morris, 37-24 and also won 40-of-61 face-offs. The Tigers were 1-for-6 on the power-play, while Robert Morris finished 0-for-2.
"I liked how we stuck with it and had to fight to the end to get the tie," said RIT head coach
Wayne Wilson We weren't ready for the start and needed a wake-up call. We took it a little personal that we were down 2-0 in our building with a great crowd. We had to dig in and I like how we played for 50 minutes and was important to get a big point."
The Colonials jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after one period of play, despite RIT holding a 14-6 edge in shots on goal.
Robert Morris would stun the RIT faithful just 14 seconds in, as Spellacy buried his own rebound off a 2-on-1 rush.
The Colonials would make it 2-0 with 10:38 left in the opening period, as Addamo took a fortunate bounce off the back boards in front and swiped it past Drackett for his sixth goal of the season.
RIT would have a great chance to cut into the lead moments later, as
Ryan Kruper (Sherwood Park, Alberta/Sherwood Park Crusaders) redirected a pass from Brown that Marotte stopped. Kruper had another whack at the rebound, but Marotte kept that out as well.
Drackett had to come up big with 6:11 left in the first period, robbing Mantenuto with a nifty glove save as the Robert Morris forward sped in on a 2-on-1 rush.
RIT would pressure on the Colonials with 13 shots on goal in the second period, but could not solve Marotte. The Tigers had eight shots on three power-plays in the period.
Drackett was called upon to make a big save on Eric Israel near the end of the second period to keep it a 2-0 game. Israel took a feed from a teammate after a RIT giveaway in their own zone. He tried to go to the far side, but Drackett stuck the left pad to keep the puck out.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 15-13-5. Tonight's game was the fourth and final regular season meetings between RIT and Robert Morris, as the Tigers won the season series, 2-1-1. Last night, Brown,
Abbott Girduckis (Belleville, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) and Brubacher had three points apiece in a 5-3 win over the Colonials. RIT and Robert Morris also split a pair of games on Oct. 27-28, 2018 at Colonials Arena.
