Lanteigne records 50-save shutout as women's hockey blanks Penn State

Tigers extend unbeaten streak to four games

ROCHESTER, NY – Junior goaltender Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) stopped a season-high 50 shots to lead the RIT women's hockey team (12-14-5, 8-8-1 CHA) to a 3-0 win over Penn State University (10-13-8, 4-9-4 CHA) from the Gene Polisseni Center Friday afternoon. RIT extended its unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) with the victory.

Lanteigne was brilliant in goal, stopping 12 shots in the opening period, 20 in the second frame and 18 more in the third period for her fourth shutout of the season. Lanteigne, who has now stopped 133 of her last 134 shots over the last three games, lowered her 2018-19 goals against average to 1.99 and raised her save percentage to .945, which for the moment is second in Division III. She also assisted on Ellie Larson's (Hutchinson, MN/Hutchinson Tigers) third period goal.

"Terra gives us a chance to win every night and that's huge for us as we head into the playoffs," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach Chad Davis. "It was an incredible performance by her today."

Lanteigne now has 2,268 career saves, 24 shy of the school mark of 2,292, held by Ali Binnington, who played for the Tigers from 2011-15.

In addition, RIT's defense blocked 39 Penn State shot attempts, as the Nittany Lions attempted 114 shots on the day. Larson, who scored RIT's second goal early in the third period, blocked a career-best nine shots, while defensive partner Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic), who drew the assist on RIT's opening goal, added a personal-best total of eight blocks.

Jade Mancini (Burlington, Ontario/Bishop Tonnos), Larson and Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) scored for RIT, who with the win, pulled five points ahead of Penn State for fourth place and just a point behind Syracuse for third in the league standings. RIT and Penn State have three games remaining and as of right now, would meet in the first round of the CHA Postseason Tournament on March at Harborcenter in Buffalo.

Penn State was 0-for-5 on the power-play, while RIT did not have a power-play opportunity.

"Our penalty-killing was strong," said Davis. "We were able to get pucks out of our zone at key times and our shot blocking was tremendous. At the end of the day, we just need to play good hockey."

Camille Leonard made 15 saves on 17 shots for the Nittany Lions. Katie Rankin and Izzy Heminger led the squad with six shots on goal apiece.

Neither team scored in a quickly played opening period of play, as Penn State held a 12-7 edge in shots. Lanteigne came up big late in the period, robbing Meike Meilleur on a rebound in front off a 2-on-1 rush.

Gout had RIT's best chance of the frame on a centering from the side of the net that caromed off a Penn State defender and nearly Leonard, who shut the pads just in time for the save. Moments later, Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic) fired a shot from the point that hit a maze of bodies in front before just going wide.

Lanteigne would be very busy in the second period, as Penn State attempted 44 total shots, with 20 on net. The RIT goaltender would turn aside all 20 shots on goal, as the Nittany Lions had three consecutive power-plays over the second half of the period, including 40 seconds of a 5-on-3 advantage.

Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) had a golden chance just under six minutes into the period, as she fired a shot off the post from the left side of the net after Leonard made a save on the initial shot by Gout.

RIT would open the scoring with 3:29 left in the second period, as Mancini collected a perfect carom off a shot by Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic) that went off the back boards, firing the puck from the left circle past a diving Leonard for her third goal of the season. Kathryn Kennedy (Hamilton, Ontario/) also assisted on the goal.

Larson gave RIT a 2-0 lead just 4:33 into the final period, collecting a rebound after Lanteigne made a save and went coast-to-coast, speeding into the Nittany Lions zone before firing a shot from the right circle that Leonard got a piece of with her glove before sliding into the net. The goal was Larson's sixth of the season. Lanteigne drew the assist on the goal, her first of the year and second of her career.

Penn State kept pressing, but Lanteigne and the RIT defense had an answer every time. Lanteigne made a tremendous save on a tip-in attempt from Meilleur and robbed Kelsey Crow with a shoulder save in the high slot to preserve the shutout.

Gout put the game away with an empty-netter with 1:50 remaining, taking a feed from Claudia Black (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Maximilian Kobe) after Barnett swiped the puck to the neutral zone to create the odd-man rush.

Today's game was third of four regular season meetings between the two schools. Penn State leads the all-time series between the two schools, 17-14-3. The Nittany Lions won the first two meetings between the two schools earlier this season on home ice by scores of 3-0 and 2-1. Lanteigne has now made 136 saves on 140 shots in three games against Penn State this season.

RIT and Penn State will wrap up the regular season series at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon from the Polisseni Center. RIT will honor seniors Brooke Baker (Saline, MI/Saline), Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard), Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot), Brinna Dochniak (Marine on St. Croix, MN/Stillwater), Kathryn Kennedy (Hamilton, Ontario/). Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic), Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep), Kandice Sheriff (Brampton, Ontario/) and Christa Vuglar (Crystal Lake, IL/Chicago Mission). It is the final home game of the 2018-19 for RIT.
