Lanteigne sets school record for saves as Tigers fall to Penn State on Senior Day

Lanteigne now has a RIT record 2,304 career saves

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (12-15-5, 8-9-1 CHA) dropped its final home contest of the 2018-19 season, 2-1 to Penn State University (11-13-8, 5-9-4 CHA) from the Gene Polisseni Center Saturday afternoon.

Before the game, RIT honored seniors Brooke Baker (Saline, MI/Saline), Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard), Brinna Dochniak (Marine on St. Croix, MN/Stillwater), Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot), Kathryn Kennedy (Hamilton, Ontario/), Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic), Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep), Kandice Sheriff (Brampton, Ontario/) and Christa Vuglar (Crystal Lake, IL/Chicago Mission).

Penn State's Katie Rankin broke a 1-1 tie with 1:12 remaining in regulation, firing a shot from the right circle off the crossbar and in for the game-winning goal. Natalie Heising added first period goal for the Nittany Lions, while Jenna Brenneman made 21 saves in net for the win.

RIT goaltender Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) made 36 saves, to become RIT's all-time leader in that category. She made her 25th save of the game with 13:07 remaining in regulation on Heising, giving her 2,293, surpassing Ali Binnington, who made 2,292 saves for the Tigers from 2011-15.

Lanteigne, who now has 2,304 career saves at RIT, leads all of Division I with 1,087 saves and a .945 save percentage in 2018-19.

Cornine scored RIT's lone goal late in the first period for the Tigers.

Penn State out-shot RIT, 38-22, including 17-5 in the third period. Penn State was 0-for-5 on the power-play, while RIT was 0-for-2.

"I was really pleased with our effort," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach Chad Davis. "I like how we are playing as we get closer to the postseason. We are sticking to our game plan and are seeing results. It was great for Terra to break the career record for saves on home ice."

Both teams scored once in an entertaining opening period of play.

Heising opened the scoring 5:16 into the game, as she redirected a centering feed from Loli Fidler over the glove of Lanteigne, just under the crossbar for her 14th goal of the season.

Moments later, Brenneman was forced to come out of the game after Land crashed the net on a good scoring chance and collided with the goaltender. Land was given a major penalty and game misconduct.

RIT would do a great job killing off the five-minute major and would tie the game at 1-1 late in the period, as Cornine took a feed from Jordan Marchese (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) and from in close, fired a shot that Brenneman got a piece of, but not enough, as it went over the goal line for Cornine's 12th tally of the season. Stella Haberman (Golden Valley, MN/Minnesota Whitecaps) also assisted on the goal.
Neither team would score in the second period, as RIT held a 10-9 edge in shots.

Heising nearly gave Penn State the lead with 11:05 left in regulation, as she fired a shot off the left post from the slot. Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) just missed putting RIT ahead with 6:25 left, as she fired a shot off the right post in front after taking a perfect centering feed from Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs).

Today's game was the fourth and final regular season meetings between the two schools. Penn State leads the all-time series between the two schools, 18-14-3. The Nittany Lions won the first two meetings between the two schools earlier this season on home ice by scores of 3-0 and 2-1.Yesterday, Lanteigne made 50 saves for the Tigers in a 3-0 shutout win from the Polisseni Center. Lanteigne has now made 172 saves on 178 shots in four games against Penn State this season.

RIT and Penn State will play each other in the first round of the CHA Tournament on Wednesday, March 6 from Harborcenter in Buffalo. RIT is currently the No. 4 seed, while Penn State is the No. 5 seed. The Tigers lead the Nittany Lions by three points with two games left to play.

RIT wraps up the 2018-19 regular season next weekend with a pair of games at CHA foe Mercyhurst University. Friday's game starts at 3 p.m.
