Lanteigne shines as women's hockey skates to a 1-1 draw at Syracuse

Junior goaltender surpasses 1,000 saves mark in 2018-19

SYRACUSE, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (11-14-5, 7-8-1 CHA) skated to a 1-1 draw against Syracuse University (8-19-3, 8-6-2 CHA) in College Hockey America action Saturday night from Tennity Ice Pavilion.

RIT's lone goal came unassisted in the first period from Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard)Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) was brilliant in net making 43 of 44 saves in the draw. She surpassed the 1,000-save mark in overtime. Lanteigne now leads the nation with 1,001 saves and raised her save percentage to .943.

Kelli Rowswell scored Syracuse's only goal and had six shots on net. Ady Cohen took the tie in net, making 15 saves on the night.

"I was really proud of our effort tonight in another hard-fought road game," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach Chad Davis. "Our goaltending was as good as it gets. We want to stay confident as we head down the stretch. I think we are headed in the right direction. We want to continue focusing on special teams and manufacturing offense."

Syracuse came out of the gate strong. The Orange out-shot the Tigers 7-2 in the first ten minutes and took the early lead on a goal by Rowswell. The goal sparked the Tigers offense as they began to pressure. Cornine would score three minutes later on an unassisted streak down the right side to tie the game at one apiece.

Lanteigne was tremendous in the second period. She stopped all 14 shots including a breakaway late in the period. Syracuse's best opportunity came on a scramble in front of the net where Abby Moloughney slapped a scorcher off Lanteigne's blocker. Dakota Derrer fired a one-timer that went off the pad of Lanteigne, who dove across to keeping the score knotted at 1-1.

Neither team could find the back of the net during the third period. RIT had 5-on-3 power play early in the period, but could not convert. The Tigers earned another power play midway through the period and just missed converting, as Claudia Black (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Maximilian Kobe) made a key pass in front of the net that found Cornine, who backhanded a shot that deflected over the net.

Lanteigne yet again showed why she leads the nation in saves as she flashed the leather, gloving a Lauren Bellefontaine shot five minutes into the third period. The Orange were given a power-play with 2:53 left in the period. The Tigers killed the crucial power play as the unit went 5-for-5 in penalty kills on the night.

Seconds after the power play was killed Brooke Avery hit the pipe of a shot from the top of the point. The Syracuse shot was reviewed and ruled no goal ending the period in a draw.

Syracuse leads the all-time series between the two schools, 19-10-3. RIT finished the regular season 3-0-1 against the Orange, out-scoring them 12-7. RIT continues to sit fourth in the CHA standings with 15 points. Three behind Syracuse for third and three ahead of Penn State.

The Tigers will return home to host Penn State University for their final home series of the regular season on Feb. 22-23. Friday's game begins at 2 p.m. and Saturday's contest starts at 1 p.m. RIT will honor its senior class on Saturday.
