ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY -- Despite a hard-fought effort, the RIT (5-20, 2-16 Liberty League) men's basketball team lost 62-54 in the 2018-19 season finale at Bard College (13-12, 9-9 Liberty League) Saturday afternoon.
Matt Anderson (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) gave RIT an early five-point lead on his 3-pointer inside the first four minutes of play. Bard answered, taking a 19-14 lead on a Justyn Rogers 3-pointer at the 10:26 mark of the half. The Tigers answered back with a 7-0 spurt, taking a 22-19 lead on a bucket from
Cobey Adekanbi (Bloomfield, CT/Loomis Chafee) with 6:36 to play in the first half.
An Alijah Rule layup with 5:28 to play gave the Raptors a 23-22 lead. But five straight points from Anderson gave the Tigers a 27-23 lead on his jumper with 4:09 remaining. Bard closed out the first half on an 8-0 run to lead 31-27 at the half.
Anderson led RIT with 12 first-half points, while Adekanbi chipped in eight points for the Tigers, who shot 31.4 percent from the floor in the half. Rogers led Bard with eight points off the bench, while David Runcie tallied seven points.
Chase Lewis (Ewing, NJ/Princeton Day School) cut the Bard lead to 31-29 early in the second half on his bucket 1:58 into the frame. Anderson tied the game at 31-31 on his driving layup at the 16:41 mark. Later in the half,
Marcell Davis (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Institute) gave the Tigers a 36-35 lead on his layup at the 12:18 mark.
Michael Young (Brookly, NY/Nazareth Regional) gave the Tigers its final lead of the game on his jumper with 10:02 to play, making the score 40-39 Tigers. Bard countered with a 10-0 run, taking a 49-40 lead on a Runcie layup with 7:17 remaining in regulation.
RIT got as close as four points when Anderson drained a 3-pointer with 5:10 to play that cut the Bard lead to 51-47. But the Raptors ballooned its lead to 12 points on a dunk by Rogers with 2:23 remaining. Bard qualified for the Liberty League Tournament for the first time in program history
RIT shot 31.9 percent from the floor overall on 22-of-69 shooting. The Tigers made five 3-pointers, and went 5-of-7 from the foul line. Anderson finished with a career-high 17 points. Adekanbi grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with eight points, and Davis finished with 10 rebounds and eight points.
