Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Joe Venniro - Executive Director of Athletic Communications

Drackett makes 39 saves to lead men's hockey to 2-0 shutout win at Sacred Heart

Tigers move into sole possession of third place in the league standings.

BRIDGEPORT, CT – Goaltender Logan Drackett (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) made 39 saves for his second collegiate shutout, leading the RIT men's hockey team (14-12-3, 12-8-3 AHA) to a 2-0 win at Sacred Heart University (12-14-3, 11-10-2 AHA) from Webster Bank Arena Friday.

Drackett was tremendous, stopping all 12 shots he faced in the opening period, 10 in the second and 17 more in the third period for his 11th win of the season. He also had a shutout versus Canisius on Nov. 13.

Shawn Cameron (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Cumberland Grads) scored a shorthanded goal early in the second period, while Jordan Peacock (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Cougars) added an even strength goal later in the frame. Cameron was also a key component of RIT's penalty-killing unit that killed off all five Sacred Heart power-play attempts including a 6-on-4 over the final 1:16 to end regulation.

Josh Benson made 13 saves in defeat for Sacred Heart.

Sacred Heart out-shot RIT, 39-15, including 17-2 in the third period. Sacred Heart was 0-for-5 on the power-play, while RIT was unsuccessful in one power-play attempt.

"It was a gusty effort and big character win for us," said RIT head coach Wayne Wilson. "From Logan (Drackett) in net to Shawn Cameron (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Cumberland Grads) on the penalty kill, I give credit to the character of this team. "This wasn't our "A" game, but we found a way to get two big points."

With the win, RIT moved into sole possession of third place in the league standings with 27 points.

Neither team scored in the opening period, as Sacred Heart held a 12-4 edge in shots on goal. RIT had a good chance with just under seven minutes left, as Adam Brubacher (Elmira, Ontario/Powell River Kings) wired a hard slap shot from the high slot off the rush that Benson blocked aside.

Drackett had to come up with a handful of key saves early on to keep it scoreless. First, he denied Marcel Godbout with a nifty glove save just under three minutes in. Drackett then denied Zach De Concilys with a nice pad save on a point-blank chance.

RIT would score twice in the second period to open up a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Cameron would get RIT on the board just 1:39 into the period, as the Tigers were shorthanded. Will Calverley (Scarborough, Ontario/Chilliwack Chiefs) won a defensive zone face-off to Chris McKay (Edmonton, Alberta/Sherwood Park Crusaders), who fired it around the back boards to Cameron. Cameron sprinted up the ice, cut to the Pioneers net and was able to slide a backhand past Benson to the short side for his sixth goal of the year.

The goal was RIT's seventh shorthanded tally of the season.

RIT would add to its lead with 5:43 left in the period, as a centering pass from the right side of the net by Jake Joffe (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) went off the skate of Peacock and a Sacred Heart player and in. Zach Salloum (Orleans, Ontario/Ottawa Jr. Senators) would also assist on the goal, Peacock's third of the season.

Sacred Heart pushed hard in the third period, but Drackett was there to stop 17 shots. He made an incredible save on Jordan Kaplan on the doorstep with 11:35 left in regulation. Six minutes later, he preserved the shutout with another tremendous save on Nick Boyagian from the edge of the crease.

Andrew Petrucci (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto Patriots) had a golden chance to make it 3-0 on a 4-on-1 rush late in regulation, but was denied by Benson, who pushed across to make a huge pad save.

The Tigers had to kill off a 6-on-4 advantage in the final 1:16 and excelled. Cameron killed off a good 30 seconds by chasing a loose puck in the Sacred Heart corner and warding off five different Pioneers in a crucial spot.

Today's 11:05 a.m. game start was the earliest in RIT's Division I history

RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 25-11-2. Today's game was the third of four meetings between the two schools this season. Sacred Heart won both earlier meetings this season at the Polisseni Center on Dec. 7-8 by scores of 4-3 in overtime and 6-4.

RIT and Sacred Heart wrap up the weekend series Saturday afternoon from Webster Bank Arena at 2:05 p.m.
