POTSDAM, NY -- The RIT (5-13, 2-9 Liberty League) men's basketball team scored the final eight points to rally for a 65-61 win in Liberty League action at Clarkson University (4-14, 3-8 Liberty League) Friday evening.
Senior
Marcell Davis (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Institute) converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 54 seconds remaining in regulation, and
Chase Lewis (Ewing, NJ/Princeton Day School) and
Jaymee Rosser (Newark, NY/Newark) made key free throws down the stretch to give the Tigers its second win in three games.
Davis led RIT with 16 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 7-of-12 from the floor.
Will Atkinson (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) tallied 14 points, while Rosser chipped in 13 points and
Cobey Adekanbi (Bloomfield, CT/Loomis Chafee)Â scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench for the Tigers, who shot 55.8 percent from the floor on 24-of-43 shooting.Â
Matthew Hornack led Clarkson with 12 points, while Jason Phelps tallied 11 points. Matt Higgins and Joe Lucas each scored 10 points for the Golden Knights, who shot 31.9 percent from the floor.
Trailing 31-28 at halftime, RIT began the second half with a 10-5 spurt, taking a 38-36 lead on a 3-pointer from Atkinson. After a Rosser 3-pointer gave the Tigers a two-point lead, Davis made one-of-two free throws to give the Tigers a 42-39 lead. He would extend the Tigers lead to 44-39 on his layup with 13:51 to play.
RIT held on to a slim lead until Hornak struck from beyond the arc with 8:08 to play, giving Clarkson a 54-51 lead. Lucas would extend the Golden Knights lead to 61-57 with a bucket with 2:04 remaining.Â
The Tigers would close out the game on a 10-2 run, including scoring the final eight points to secure the win. A pair of Atkinson free throws cut the Clarkson lead to 61-59 with 1:31 remaining. After a Higgins miss, Davis scored despite being fouled with 54 seconds remaining in regulation. He drained the free throw to give the Tigers a 62-61 lead. Lewis converted both of his free throws with 22 seconds to play to extend the RIT lead to 64-61, and Rosser stole the ball off a Clarkson timeout and converted the free throw to make it a 65-61 final.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, February 2 at 4 p.m. at St. Lawrence University.
