RIT Wrestling wins 54th Annual RIT Invitational

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT wrestling team brought first place at the 54th Annual RIT Invitationals from the Gordon Field House Saturday. The Tigers came home first with a team score of 154.0 points. Senior Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) was named the Tony Wallace Award winner as the tournament's most outstanding wrestler.

King won his third title of the season Saturday, going 5-0. He beat Tyler Speraw (Penn State-Behrend) with a fall at 2:41 in his opening match. He defeated Jakai Townsend (NEC) with a fall at 3:44 in his next match, and took down Stephen Cerrone (Trinity) with an 18-3 technical fall in the quarterfinals. King beat Charlie Grygas (Oswego), 6-0 in the semifinals and beat Sam Gross (John Carroll), 3-0 in the championship bout.

Kaidon Winters (Athens, PA/Athens Area) was a winner at 157 lbs. He began his day by pinning Jake Longerman (Thiel) in :57 seconds. He pinned Thomas Galagher (Case Western) with a fall at 2:50 in his next match and advanced to the semifinals with a medical forfeit. In the semifinals, Winters pinned Chase Lind (WPI) at 1:43 in the semifinals and took the title on a forfeit. Austin Lamb (Owego, NY/Tioga) was second at 157 lbs., posting a 3-1 record, including a pin in his opening round bout.

Ben Dougherty won the title at 174 lbs., pinning Blaise Bressler (Norwich) at 3:44 in his opening match. He went on to beat Dylan Proper (Thiel) in the quarterfinals. Dougherty took down Brendan Marion (WPI) 7-4 in the semifinals and defeated Seth Winkle (John Carroll) 6-3 in the title bout.

John Donohue (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) went 4-1 on the day, placing second at 184 lbs., while Colby Giroux (Richmond, VT/Mount Mansfield) went 3-1, placing second at 197 lbs.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 4 when the Tigers face SUNY Oswego.
