ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT freshman forward
Christa Stefanopoulos (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Dawson College) totaled two goals and an assist while sophomore forward
Abby Davies (Ashton, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators) added a goal and an assist to lead the Tigers to a 5-2 victory over visiting Long Island University, Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- RIT opened the scoring after freshman forward Emily Stemple (Saginaw, MI/Detroit Honeybaked) received a short pass from Davies in the neutral zone and skated to the top of the right face-off dot to score on a long shot inside the right post with 9:48 on the first-period clock.
- LIU tied the score with 4:49 left in the period. Freshman forward Alva Johnsson took a shot on Tiger senior goalie Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) during a right-wing rush and curled behind the Tiger goal to corral her own rebound and backhand a shot into the net.
- The Tigers re-took the lead with 12:06 left in the second period. RIT controlled the puck around the top of the Sharks' zone to the right face-off circle where an open Davies held for a half second before zipping a wrist shot inside the near post.
- The Tigers took a 3-1 lead with 7:15 left in the third period after Stefanopoulos sent a puck from the left flank to the front of the goal that deflected into the net off a Shark defender's leg.
- LIU got one back with 2:10 left in regulation on a tally by freshman forward Renee Hoffman, but the Tigers re-took a three-goal edge on an empty-net goal by freshman forward Jaymee Nolan (Dublin, Ontario/London Devilettes) with 41.4 remaining.
