ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (1-3) women's basketball team won its first game of the season with a 66-60 win over Nazareth College (3-1) on night one of the 2019 Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout from Clark Gym Thursday evening. Trailing by two at halftime, RIT outscored the Golden Flyers 36-28 in the second half.
RIT shot 38.5 percent from the floor on 25-of-65 shooting. The Tigers made 4-of-15 from beyond the arc, and went 12-of-17 from the foul line.
Brooke Stanley (Minnetonka, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) and
Sabrina Wolfe (Troy, NY/Troy) each tallied 16 points to pace the Tigers.
Taylor Signor (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) chipped in 12 points, and
Alyssa Juergens (Rochester, NY/Hilton) tallied 10 points and had seven rebounds.Â
Rachel Gjonaj led Nazareth with 19 points and seven rebounds. Jadyn Abrams added 14 points for the Golden Flyers who shot 41.7 percent from the floor.
RIT trailed by two at halftime, and 43-40 heading into the fourth quarter, but turned up the defensive pressure forcing the Golden Flyers into 20 turnovers, including 10 in the second half. The Tigers fell behind 49-43 early in the fourth quarter on an Elizabeth White bucket. RIT responded with an 11-2 run, taking a 54-51 lead on a
Megan Roy (Newbury, NH/Kearsarge Regional) basket with 2:45 to play. Rachel Benedict tied the score for Nazareth converting an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:47 remaining, that tied the score at 54-54.
Wolfe converted an old-fashioned 3-point play of her own with 16 seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 62-56 lead. Signor made clutch free throws in the final seconds to secure the win for RIT.
