Box Score ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (19-10) women's volleyball team went 1-1 Saturday at the New York State Challenge, coming back to beat Montclair State University, 3-2 (25-20, 17-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-8), while losing to SUNY Cortland 3-2 (31-33, 25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 12-15).
The duo of
Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) and
Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) led RIT offensively against Montclair State. Hobler finished with 21 kills and 16 digs, while Higgins racked up 20 kills and added 17 digs.
Joelle Marston (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) added nine kills, while
Brianna Ellis (Wayne, PA/Radnor) handed out 30 assists.
Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led the Tigers with 23 digs, while
Paige Daly (Allison Park, PA/Hampton) added 11 digs.
"In a match that became potentially more mental than physical, we settled down and started to execute better as the match progressed," said RIT head coach
Jim Lodes. "I really like our fight. When our discipline matches our will to compete we are a really good team."
Versus SUNY Cortland, Hobler led the way with 24 kills and 15 digs, while Higgins finished with 20 kills and 17 digs. Mekker had 55 assists and 12 digs against the Red Dragons, while Simonetti had a season-high 43 digs.
Kiana Walker (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive) finished with 14 digs.
"We had chances to close out sets and competed very well in stretches versus Cortland," said Lodes "This weekend has provided some focal points for us to work on next week in our preparation for Liberty League Championships."
RIT, the third seed, will compete at the Liberty League Championship beginning on Friday, Nov. 8 hosted by Clarkson University.
