BRISTOL, RI -- The RIT wrestling team placed eighth at the 2019 Roger Williams University Invitational. The Tigers were eighth out of 17 teams with a score of 74 points. Johnson and Wales University took home first place with a score of 174 points.
Senior
Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) won the title at 165 lbs., while
Kaidon Winters (Athens, PA/Athens Area) went 4-1, placing second at 165 lbs.
Joe Lupisella (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) (174 lbs.) and
Colby Giroux (Richmond, VT/Mount Mansfield) (184 lbs.) each placed fifth in their respective weight classes.
King defeated Rudy Rodriguez (Naval Academy Prep) in his opening match with a Fall at 2:29, and pinned Kade Kravits (Kings College) at 2:26 in his second round bout. In the quarterfinals, King defeated Michael Angers (Castleton State) 4-0, and advanced to the title match with a Technical Fall (15-0 4:57) over John Garcia (TCNJ).
Winters defeated Fox Maxwell (Bridgewater State) with a Technical Fall (16-0 2:39) in his opening bout. He. beat Colin Mengold (Plymouth State) with a Fall at 1:14 in his second round match, and took down Kade Loughney (NYU) with a Fall at 2:59 in the quarterfinal. In the semifinals, Winters. pinned Roy Forys (Wesleyan) at 5:45. King and Winters would be paired in the title bout at 165 lbs. with King taking the title via forfeit.
Lupisella began with an 11-7 win over Niko Chitty (Norwich) and followed that up by pinning Gabe Rodriguez (NYU) at 5:21. He beat Chance Lapier (Castleton State) with a Fall at 3:11. He defeated Jett Tancsik (Rhode Island College) and Joseph McCarthy (TCNJ) by identical 8-3 scores in his next two bouts. Lupisella lost to Demitereus Henry (SUNY Cortland) 5-4 but came back to beat Daniel Kilroy (TCNJ) to take fifth place.
Giroux opened with a 6-3 decision over Jason Hoffman (Castleton State). He defeated Kal-El Corbitt (TCNJ) 4-0 in the quarterfinal, but lost to David Key (Naval Academy Prep) with a Fall at 2:15 in the semifinal, but came back to beat Daniel Surich (TCNJ) in the fifth place match.
James Ost (Sunnyvale, CA/Fremont) went 4-2 at 149 lbs., while
Shane Murphy (Mt. Olive, NJ/Mt. Olive) (141 lbs.),
Ian Houck (Cottekill, NY/Rondout Valley) (157 lbs.) and
Nate Osborne (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) (133 lbs.) each went 3-2.
RIT returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 24, when the Tigers compete at the New York State Championship from Laker Hall on the campus of SUNY Oswego.
