ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (0-1-1) women's hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie against the University of Vermont (1-0-1) Saturday afternoon at the Gene Polisseni Center. First-year
Emily Stemple (Saginaw, MI/Detroit Honeybaked) tallied two goals for the Tigers.
Shots were 41-20 in favor of Vermont. The Tigers went 1-for-3 on the power play, while Vermont was 2-for-3 with the man advantage.
Stemple led the Tigers with two goals, while
Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) and
Rachel Goff (Naperville, IL/Chicago Mission) each scored. For Goff, the goal was her first in a Tiger's uniform.
Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) made 37 stops in net for RIT.
Sini Karjalainen led Vermont with a goal and two assists while, Corinne McCool tallied a goal and an assist. Val Caldwell and Therese Schafzahl each scored for the Catamounts, and Maude Poulin-Labelle had two assists. Natalie Ferenc got the start in net for Vermont, making nine saves. Blanka Skodova played the final 30 minutes, making seven saves.
RIT took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal from Barnett at 9:09 of the first period.
Taylor Baker (Toronto, Ontario/North Toronto Collegiate Institute) fired a shot that was blocked by a Vermont defender in front. The rebound came to Barnett who scored into the open net to give RIT the lead.
Karjalainen tied the game at 1-1 on her power play goal at 15:14 of the first period on assists from Maude Poulin-Labelle and McCool. The Catamounts took a 2-1 lead on a Caldwell power play goal at 4:21 of the second period.
The Tigers tied the score 1:29 later on Goff's first collegiate goal at 5:50 of the second period. She scored off a rebound in front of the Vermont net with the assists going to
Madison Farrand (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) and
Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic).
Schafzahl gave Vermont a 3-2 lead on her goal at 10:31 of the second period on assists from Poulin-Labelle and Sara Levesque.
Late in the period, Stemple struck twice for RIT. She finished off some fin puck movement by the Tigers, with Larkin finding Stemple with a nice pass, tying the score at 3-3.
Her goal at 14:28 on assists from
Jordan Marchese (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) and
Maddie Dunham (Glenview, IL/Chicago Mission) gave the Tigers a slim 4-3 lead.
Midway through the third period Vermont tied the game on a McCool goal on assists from Kristina Shanahan and Karjalainen at 9:29.
RIT returns to action on Friday, Oct. 11, when the Tigers host St. Cloud State University at 6 p.m. at the Gene Polisseni Center.
