Men's hockey begins 2019-20 season with a road win at Colgate University

HAMILTON, NY – The RIT (1-0-0) men's hockey team began the 2019-20 season with a 3-1 win at Colgate University (0-1-0) from the Class of 1965 Arena Saturday evening.

Senior Adam Brubacher (Elmira, Ontario/Powell River Kings) led RIT with a goal and two assists. Shawn Cameron (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Cumberland Grads) scored a pair of power play goals, and Jake Hamacher (Corona, CA/Dubuque Fighting Saints) handed out a pair of assists. Bryson Traptow (Calgary, Alberta/Camrose Kodiaks) and Andrew Rinaldi (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Wellington Dukes) each had an assist, while Logan Drackett (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) was outstanding in net, making 33 saves.

Shots were 34-14 in favor of Colgate. RIT went 2-for-5 on the power play, while holding the Raiders to one power play goal in seven chances. The Tigers blocked 18 shots.

"I thought our special teams were the difference tonight," said RIT head coach Wayne Wilson. "We gave them some opportunities, but the penalty-kill stepped up, and we took advantage of our chances."

Adam Brubacher (Elmira, Ontario/Powell River Kings) gave RIT a 1-0 lead on his first goal of the season at 3:11 of the first period. Elijah Gonsalves (Scarborough, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) fought to keep the puck in the Colgate zone. Bryson Traptow (Calgary, Alberta/Camrose Kodiaks) found Brubacher at the point, and he fired a low shot that beat Benson to give the Tigers the lead.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead on a power play goal from Shawn Cameron (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Cumberland Grads) at 8:09 of the first period. Brubacher fed Jake Hamacher (Corona, CA/Dubuque Fighting Saints) along the side of the Colgate net. He one-timed a pass to Cameron who poked a shot home from in close.

Colgate cut the RIT lead in half on a power play goal from Josh McKechney at 10:06. Jacob Panetta found McKechney with a pass and he beat Drackett with a shot.

Drackett, who made 15 saves in the period, made two big saves late in the period to keep the Raiders stymied. RIT outshot Colgate 5-1 early in the period, but shots finished 16-8 in favor of the Raiders.

Cameron, Brubacher and Hamacher combined again in the second period with a power play goal a 3:11. Hamacher fed Brubacher in the slot who fired a wrist shot. Cameron, who was parked in front of the Colgate net, tipped the puck home for his second of the game to give the Tigers a two-goal lead.

RIT's defense was stout in the third period, killing off a 5-minute major midway through the period. Drackett made a big glove save on a shot from Nick Austin early in the period, making 10 in the period.

"We play the first month of the season on the road and have to find ways to win," said Wilson. "We found a way to win tonight."

RIT returns to action on Friday, Oct. 11 against No. 17 Bowling Green State University at 8 p.m. at the Ice Breakers Tournament in Toledo, Ohio.
