Men's hockey beats No. 17 Bowling Green in OT in first round of Ice Breaker Tournament

TOLEDO, OHIO – Freshman Caleb Moretz (Fairbanks, AK/Flin Flon Bombers) scored 1:18 into overtime as the RIT (2-0-0) men's hockey team defeated No. 17 Bowling Green (1-1-0) 3-2 Friday evening in the first round of the 2019 Ice Breaker Tournament. RIT trailed 2-0 in the second period, but stormed back with three straight goals to get the win in overtime.

"We did not have a good first period," said RIT head coach Wayne Wilson. "But we were much better in the second period, and opportunistic in the third period. I thought the penalty kill late in the third period was big, and Drackett made some big saves."

Shots were 32-22 in favor of Bowling Green. The Tigers were 0-for-3 with the man-advantage, and held the Falcons scoreless in four power plays.

Moretz, Brody Valette (Calgary, Alberta/Whitecourt Wolverines) and Andrew Rinaldi (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Wellington Dukes) each scored for the Tigers. Colton Trumbla (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Michael's Buzzers) handed out two assists. Logan Drackett (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) improved to 2-0-0 on the season, making 30 saves.

Evan Dougherty and Casey Linkenheld each scored for Bowling Green. Eric Dop took the loss in net for the Falcons, making 19 saves.

Dougherty gave Bowling Green a 1-0 lead on his goal at 15:17 of the first period on an assist from Adam Conquest.

The Falcons took a 2-0 lead on an odd-man rush goal from Linkenheld at 13:01 of the second period. Alex Barber nudged a pass to Linkenheld and he slid a shot passed Drackett to give the Falcons a two-goal lead.

Brody Valette (Calgary, Alberta/Whitecourt Wolverines) cut the Bowling Green lead to 2-1 on his first goal of the season at 13:35 of the second period. The Tigers worked the puck up ice. Colton Trumbla (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Michael's Buzzers) found Valette with a pass, and he fired a shot from the slot that beat Dop.

RIT got stronger and stronger as the second period went on, outshooting the Falcons 15-6 in the second period.

Bowling Green held a 2-1 lead late in the third period. The Tigers weathered the Bowling Green storm until the last five minutes of regulation. Rinaldi showed his speed, breaking into the Falcons zone, beating Dop with back-handed shot, tying the score at 2-2.

Will Calverley (Scarborough, Ontario/Chilliwack Chiefs) had a chance in close inside the last 20 seconds of the period, but Dop made the save to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Bowling Green had a chance, breaking in 4-on-1. Drackett made the save and RIT broke up ice. Calverley gathered the puck along the boards and found Moretz all alone in front of the Bowling Green net. His wrist shot beat Dop to give the Tigers the win. It was the first collegiate goal for Moretz.

RIT begins the season 2-0-0 for the first time in the Division I era. The Tigers will play No. 12 Ohio State in the title game of the Ice Breaker Tournament at 5:05 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio.
