ROCHESTER, NY -- Junior defender
Jared Short (Grafton, WI/Cedarburg) scored in the 101st minute to give the RIT (6-8-1, 4-4-0 Liberty League) men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Ithaca College (11-4-2, 4-3-1 Liberty League) Wednesday evening. With the win, the Tigers move ahead of St. Lawrence into the sixth and final Liberty League Tournament spot.
Shots were 11-8 in favor of Ithaca, while each team took three corner kicks. Short finished with a goal, while Simone Garno led the Tigers with a goal and an assist.
Nathan Nuwer (Alden, NY/Alden) added an assist for RIT, and
Spencer Raymond-Smith (Stow, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) picked up the win in net for the Tigers, making two saves.
Kevin Turi scored for Ithaca, and Max Lichtenstein took the loss in net for the Bombers, making three saves.
RIT had a chance to take a lead late in the first half when Ithaca was whistled for a foul inside its own penalty area. Lichtenstein made a diving stop on
Mark-Vincent Sansone's (Hilton, NY/Aquinas Institute) attempt to keep it 0-0 at halftime.
After halftime, RIT took the lead on Garno's goal in the 62nd minute. Nuwer slid a pass through to Garno, who was making a run down the center of the pitch, and he slid a shot underneath Lichtenstein, who had come off his line, for his seventh goal of the season.
Ithaca tied the game in the 85th minute when Turi scored off a loose ball inside the RIT penalty box. Raymond-Smith had come out to punch the ball away, but he could not punch the ball away cleanly, allowing Turi to get a shot away.
The Tigers won the game off a free kick. Garno sent a free kick into the Ithaca box that Short ran onto and headed past Lichtenstein for his sixth goal of the season and second straight game-winner.
RIT wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 2, when the Tigers host Vassar College at 2 p.m. The Tigers will honor the class of 2020 prior to the game.
