ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (1-5-1) women's hockey team snapped a 10-game winless streak with a 6-0 win over Brown University (0-1-0) Friday evening from the Gene Polisseni Center. The win is the first shut-out win for the Tigers since a 3-0 win over Penn State on Feb. 22, 2019.
Junior goalie
Jessi O'Leary (Woodstock, New Brunswick/Notre Dame Hounds) picked up her first career shut-out, finishing with 37 saves. The win is the second of her career.
"Jessi proved that she is a capable goalie," said the Bruce B. Bates Hockey Coach
Chad Davis. "She came up big for us tonight."
Shots were 37-36 in favor of Brown. RIT was 3-for-5 on the power play, while stopping the Bears on all 10 of their man advantages. The Tigers took 10 penalties for 20 minutes, while Brown took six penalties for 12 minutes.
Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) led RIT with three points on two goals and an assist.
Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic) and
Rachel Goff (Naperville, IL/Chicago Mission) each had a goal and an assist, while
Abby Davies (Ashton, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators) handed out a pair of assists.
"Big thing tonight is we were able to get the power play going, and the penalty-kill did a nice job," Said Bruce B. Bates Hockey Coach
Chad Davis. "We got contributions from the entire line-up tonight."
Hayley Kliczko took the loss in net for Brown, making 12 saves. Calla Isaac played the final 40 minutes, making 18 saves.
RIT exploded for four first-period goals. Barnett scored twice in the period, while Land and
Jaymee Nolan (Dublin, Ontario/London Devilettes) each scored. Nolan's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
Nolan gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead on her first goal of the season at 10:38. She and
Madison Farrand (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) worked the puck behind the Brown goal. Farrand fed Nolan in front and she poked home the puck.
Barnett made it 2-0 RIT on the first of her two goals. With RIT on the power play, Land fired a shot from the point that Barnett tapped past Kliczko.
Land gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead on a slap shot from the point at 12:09 on assists from
Taylor Baker (Toronto, Ontario/North Toronto Collegiate Institute) and Barnett. Barnett tallied her second goal of the period with her goal at 15:58 of the first on an assist from
Madison Itagaki (Glenview, IL/Chicago Mission).
Goff tallied the lone goal in the second period, giving RIT a 5-0 lead on her power play goal at 17:40. She got the puck along Brown's back-boards and drove to the front of the Bears net. Her shot dribbled underneath Calla Isaac.
Each team combined for 16 minutes in penalties in the second period, including 10 minutes for the Tigers. Brown fired 12 shots in the second period, but O'Leary remained sharp, stopping all 12 shots she faced.
Reaghan Pietrowski (Curtice, OH/Detroit Honeybaked) scored 1:44 into the third period on a wrist shot that found its way through traffic and into the net to give RIT a 6-0 lead.
RIT's penalty-kill killed off a 5-on-3 power play by the Bears midway through the period, not allowing a shot on net.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. versus Brown University from the Gene Polisseni Center.
