ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 22 RIT (10-3-1) women's soccer team and the University of Rochester (8-4-2) played to a 1-1 draw in non-league action from Tiger Stadium Thursday afternoon.
Shots were 16-15 in favor of RIT. The Yellowjackets took five corner kicks to three for the Tigers. Carolyn Richards scored for Rochester, while
Christine Cataldo-Smith (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) tallied for RIT. Emma Schechter made six saves in net for the Yellowjackets, while
Alyssa Salls (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) made five saves for the Tigers.
Rochester took the lead on a goal in the 24th minute on the counter-attack. Cesca Sheppard sent in a service that Richards fired into the far corner to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead. The Tigers had a chance in the 37th minute on a low, hard shot from
Madison Corso (Honolulu, HI/Kaiser) that Schechter saved.
RIT increased the pressure on Rochester's defense in the second half.
Mia White (Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School) had a chance when
Abbey Saia (Monroe, CT/Masuk) slid a pass through to White, but her shot from 10-yards was saved.
The Tigers equalized in the 67th minute on Cataldo-Smith's team-leading 10th goal of the season. Saia got free on the flank and drove into the Rochester penalty area. She fed Cataldo-Smith who calmly turned and fired into the corner tying the game at 1-1. Cataldo-Smith has now scored at least one point in seven straight games (9g, 2a) for the Tigers.
Lauren Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had two chances at goal late in regulation. The first came on a shot from 18-yards out that Schechter saved. The second, Zeglen was 1-v-1 with Schechter who came off her line and deflected the Zeglen shot wide. Saia had a chance in the 98th minute, but her volley off a service from
Jessica Jones (Holden, MA/Wachusett) sailed wide of the Rochester net.
In the 104th minute, Cataldo-Smith looked to score the game winner for RIT. Saia sent a ball into the Rochester box that Cataldo-Smith connected on. The shot appeared to be headed for the near corner, but Schechter somehow got over to make the miraculous save to preserve the tie.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Union College beginning at 12 p.m.
