Women's hockey loses CHA opener at Mercyhurst

ERIE, PA -- The RIT (0-4-1, 0-1-0 CHA) women's hockey team was defeated by Mercyhurst University (3-1-0. 1-0-0 CHA), 4-2 in the CHA opener for the Tigers Friday evening.

Shots were 46-23 in favor of the Lakers. The Tigers went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Mercyhurst went 1-for-8 with the man advantage. Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) and Jade Mancini (Hamilton, Ontario/Bishop Tonnos) each scored for the Tigers, while Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) made 42 saves.

Emily Pinto had two assists for Mercyhurst, and Kennedy Blair picked up the win in net for the Lakers, making 21 saves.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead on a Barnett goal at 10:23 of the first period. She took a pass from Abby Davies (Ashton, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators) and beat Blair with a shot for her second goal of the season. The Lakers tied the score at 1-1 on an Emma Nuutinen goal at 13:54 of the first period off an assist from Alexa Vasko.

Mercyhurst took a 2-1 lead early in the second period when Alexandra Weiss tallied her second goal of the season on an assist from Nuutinen and Vasko at 2:51 of the period. Megan Korzack gave the Lakers a 3-1 lead on her fourth goal of the season at 11:48 of the second period.

Mancini cut the Mercyhurst lead to 3-2 on her first goal of the season at 2:42 of the third period on an assist from Taylor Baker (Toronto, Ontario/North Toronto Collegiate Institute). Summer-Rae Dobson put the game away with an empty-net goal for the Lakers with 20 seconds remaining in the third to make it a 4-2 final.

These two teams will play again on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. in Erie, Pa.
