Seven women's standouts earn medals at 2018 Mary Hosking Invite

Kristen Zablonski picks up singles and doubles championship to lead RIT

GENEVA, NY – Seven members of the RIT women's tennis team earned medals at the 2018 Mary Hosking Invitational, hosted by William Smith College on Saturday, Sept. 8 and Sunday, Sept. 9. Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) won the "B" flight singles championship and teamed up with Anne Taylor (Beaver, PA/Beaver) to win the "A" flight doubles title.

It was an all RIT final in the "A" flight doubles championship. Zablonski and Taylor defeated Ameila Ying and Shayna Ginster (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), 8-2 in the championship. Both teams advanced after stirring semifinal wins. Zablonski and Taylor knocked off Camila Garcia and Cami Ruiz Vega of Rochester, 8-6, while Ying and Ginster defeated Sophia Aulicino and Audrey Chor of Hamilton. On Saturday, Ginster and Ying earned an 8-1 win over Geneseo and 8-5 victory over William Smith in the quarterfinals. Taylor and Zablonski knocked off doubles teams from Ithaca and St. Lawrence to advance.

Zablonski claimed victory in the "B" singles competition. On Saturday, Zablonski knocked off Nina Lurie of Geneseo, 8-1 and Caroline Dunn of Ithaca, 8-3 in the quarterfinals. She opened Sunday by rolling to an 8-5 win over Rebecca Ingber of Hamilton in the semifinals. Zablonski earned the title by shutting out Sarah Bargamian of Hamilton, 8-0. Zablonski is now 5-0 in 2018.
 
Freshman Kirsten Auble (Portland, OR/Sunset) garnered runner-up honors in the "C" flight singles competition. On Saturday, she earned a 9-7 win over Abbey Reinhart in the first round and defeated Julianna Schulz of Geneseo, 8-3 in the quarters. She opened Sunday by rolling to an 8-3 win Leland Barclay of William Smith in the semifinals before falling to Maggie Bonomo of the Herons, 8-3 in the championship.
 
Claire Casalnova (Mars, PA/Pine Richland) and Annie Steinbrink (Upper Dublin, PA/Upper Dublin) won their first round match, 8-3 over Olga Shvetsiva and Amorim Da Silva, before falling in the quarterfinals.
 
Annie Steinbrink (Upper Dublin, PA/Upper Dublin) won the consolation championship in the "D" flight. On Sunday, Steinbrink knocked off Erin Schantz of Nazareth, Marie Bank of St. Lawrence and Alkohouri Stuart of Geneseo. Auble and Carmen Navas-Davis (Findlay, Ohio/Greenville) were victorious in the "B" flight doubles consolation flight, recording wins over St. Lawrence, Hamilton and Geneseo Sunday.

In other singles play Saturday, Ying picked up an 8-1 win over Jackie Lisak of Nazareth in the opening round of the "A" singles bracket, before falling to Camila Garcia of Rochester. Shayna Ginster (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) picked up an 8-5 win over Charlotte Engebrecht of William Smith in the "B" flight first round. Casalnova was an 8-3 winner in the opening round of the "C" flight, while Julianne Ho (Scarsdale, NY/Edgemont) and Julia Smolowitz (Marlborough, MA/Hudson) picked up opening round wins in the "D" flight.
 
Ho's win was the first of her collegiate career.

Taylor was runner-up in the "A" singles bracket consolation, earning a pair of wins on Sunday.
 
RIT is off next weekend, but returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the ITA Tournament at William Smith.
