ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (5-3-0, 1-2-0 Liberty League) women's soccer team won its first Liberty League game of 2018 with a 2-0 victory over Clarkson University (4-5-1, 0-3-0 Liberty League) Saturday afternoon from sunny Tiger Stadium.
Mia White (Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School) and
Abbey Saia (Monroe, CT/Masuk) each scored first half goals for the Tigers, while
Jessica Jones (Holden, MA/Wachusett),
Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) and
Mia White (Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School) each had assists.
Ingrida Ivaska (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) got the start in net for RIT, earning the win making three saves in the first half.
Alyssa Salls (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) played the entire second half for the Tigers.
Shots were 8-6 in favor of Clarkson, while RIT had four shots on net, and the Golden Knights fired three shots on target. Elyse Green took the loss in net for Clarkson, making two saves.
RIT got on the board early, scoring in the fifth minute on White's third goal of the season. Jones sent a service into the Clarkson penalty area. White ran onto the ball and redirected a header into the lower left corner to give the Tigers an early lead.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute on Saia's first goal of the season. Polanco fired a ball into the Clarkson area from the flank. White deflected the ball to Saia, who fired first time to give the Tigers a two-goal lead.
Clarkson's best chance came off a free kick with a little over 28 minutes remaining in the first half. Alicia Bushey fired a shot from 20 yards that sailed just over the crossbar and out of play.
Marla Roberts (Penfield, NY/Home Schooled) had a chance late in the second half for RIT, firing a shot on target from 15 yards out. Green made the save, with the rebound caroming to
Piper Zimmerman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) in close. Zimmerman fired a shot that was gobbled up by Green to keep it a two-goal deficit.
The Golden Knights had a chance with four minutes remaining. Bushey fired a free kick from 20 yards that rang off the crossbar and the RIT defense cleared the ball out of danger.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 2 when the Tigers host Nazareth College at 4 p.m. on the grass at Tiger Stadium.
