ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (6-3-0) women's soccer team scored seven goals for the second time since 2001, rolling to a 7-0 win over Nazareth College (5-3-3) Tuesday afternoon in rainy conditions from Tiger Stadium. It is the most goals in a game scored by the Tigers since putting up eight in a win over Medaille College in 2015.
Marla Roberts (Penfield, NY/Home Schooled) led RIT with a career-high five points on two goals and an assist.
Lauren Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville),
Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) and
Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) each had a goal and an assist, while
Piper Zimmerman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) handed out two assists.
Mia White (Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School) and
Rachel Strader (Seneca, SC/Seneca) also scored.
Ingrida Ivaska (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) got the start in net, making three saves in the first 45 minutes.
Alyssa Salls (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) played the second half and made one save.
"This was an exciting day for us," said RIT head coach
Liz Masterson. "A lot of things we have been working on clicked and the effort was solid for the entire game."
White got the Tigers on the board with her goal off a corner kick in the 13th minute. Jones tipped the ball to White inside the Nazareth 6-yard box, and she tapped a shot home to give the Tigers an early lead.
Thiel gave RIT a 2-0 on her goal in the 20th minute off a long shot that skipped along the wet grass and through Nazareth goalkeeper Hannah Miller's hands. Zeglen gave RIT a 3-0 lead on her goal in the 33rd minute, and Strader made it 4-0 on her goal in the 40th minute off an assist from Roberts.
Roberts opened the second-half scoring with her fourth goal of the season in the 68th minute with the assists going to Zimmerman and Zeglen. Polanco tallied in the 71st minute and Roberts scored her second in the 80th minute to close out the scoring and make it a 7-0 final.
Shots were 16-4 in favor of RIT, who took five corner kicks to one for the Golden Flyers. Miller took the loss in net for Nazareth, making four saves.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 when the Tigers face St. Lawrence University at 2 p.m. in Canton, N.Y.
