GENEVA, NY – RIT women's soccer team (4-3-0, 0-2-0 Liberty League) suffered a 1-0 loss at No. 8 William Smith (6-2-0, 2-0-0 Liberty League) in a Liberty League contest on the campus of the Herons at Cozzens Field on Wednesday afternoon.
RIT was out shot 29-8 by William Smith, as the Herons also held a 7-3 edge in corners. Emilie Sauvayre scored the lone goal for William Smith midway through the first half.
Ingrida Ivaska (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) took the loss in net for the Tigers, making four saves in 45 minutes of action.
Alyssa Salls (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) played the second half, making five saves. Veronica Romines got the win for William Smith, making two saves
The Tigers had their best scoring opportunity in the first half in the 38th minute. It started from a build up in the defense that got the ball to
Piper Zimmerman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) in the attacking third where she sent a perfect cross that found
Mia White (Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School), who one timed it into the back of the net but unfortunately was waved offside. Zimmerman also added a shot on net after a corner was deflected right to her feet.
William Smith opened up the scoring in the 21st minute when Sauvayre dribbled towards the Tigers defense made a move to her right and blasted a 25-yard shot on frame, finding the top right corner.
The Tigers tried to mount a comeback in the second half. RIT had a pair of opportunities in the 61st minute with back-to-back corner kicks. The first corner taken by
Rebecca Hext (Ottawa, ON/Longfields Davidson Heights) found
Danielle Losquadro (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun), who fired a shot that was blocked by a Heron defender.
In the closing minutes, the Tigers were fouled in a threatening position just in front of the corner flag.
Abbey Saia (Monroe, CT/Masuk) fired a free kick that bounced around in the box, but no Tiger could get to it before it was cleared out.
The Herons peppered Salls in the second half, firing 14 shots where she was forced to make five saves.
"Today's game was really high paced, played at a really high level, and competitive on both sides," said RIT head coach
Liz Masterson. "We did a great job of playing 90 minutes today, but they scored a beautiful goal and we give them credit for scoring that quality of a finish."
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 29 when the Tigers face Clarkson University at 3 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
