Simone's penalty kick in overtime lifts men's soccer to big win over Brockport

Tigers win both games at the Doug May Memorial Classic

ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Nick Simone (Hilton, NY/Hilton) converted a penalty kick in the 100th minute to give the RIT (2-0-0) men's soccer team a 2-1 come-from-behind win over The College at Brockport (1-1-0) on night two of the 2018 Doug May Memorial Soccer Classic Sunday evening from RIT's Turf Field.

With time running out in the first overtime session, Brockport was whistled for a foul inside its penalty box. Simone stepped up and buried the shot to give the Tigers the win.

"Fantastic result tonight," said RIT head coach Bill Garno. "Hats off to Brockport. They came to play and rocked us back on our heels a little in the first half. We responded in the second half, and our fitness played a big role at the end of the game and in overtime."

Simone also assisted on RIT's goal in regulation, scored by Mark-Vincent Sansone (Hilton, NY/Aquinas Institute) in the 57th minute.

Shots were 13-11 in favor of Brockport, while RIT held a slight 5-4 corner kick advantage. Will Sokol (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) improved to 2-0-0 in goal for RIT, making four saves in net. Tautis Poniskaitis took the loss for the Golden Eagles, making two saves.

Brockport took the early lead on a goal from Jason Hayes in the tenth minute. Jeff Hibbard started the play with some nice dribbling and footwork, eventually finding Hayes with a good service. Hayes hit the shot first time and beat Sokol to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.

RIT's best first-half scoring chances came midway through. Sansone had a shot from just outside the Brockport box that just went wide with a little less than 30 minutes remaining in the half. He had another chance a short time later, when his header off a free kick went just wide.

The Tigers gained some momentum and broke through in the 57th minute, tying the game on Sansone's first goal of the season. Simone sent a corner kick that Sansone headed in first time, tying the game at 1-1.

Both teams looked to be headed for a second 10-minute period when Brockport committed the foul inside its own box. Simone calmly sent home the shot to five RIT the win. RIT improved to 2-4-1 all-time against the Golden Eagles.

RIT opened the season with a 3-0 win over St. John Fisher Friday night. It is RIT's first 2-0 to start to a season since 2004, when that team began 4-0.

RIT returns to action on Wednesday, September 5 when the Tigers host Keuka College at 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers defeated the Wolves 6-1 last season in Keuka Park, N.Y.
