Men's soccer loses 2-1 to Rochester in Seventh Annual Hillside Community Shield

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (3-1-0) men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2018 season, 2-1 at No. 6 University of Rochester (4-0-0) Tuesday evening in the Seventh Annual Hillside Community Shield from Fauver Stadium. The Yellowjackets tallied the game winner in the 69th minute after the Tigers tied the score earlier in the second half.

After a scoreless first half, Rochester opened the scoring on a goal from Mitch Volis in the 51st minute. He scored off an assist from Nik Angyal, making the run to the back post and scoring first-time off the volley.

The Tigers tied the game seven minutes later. Ryan Gray (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) was dragged down inside the Rochester penalty area. Nick Simone (Hilton, NY/Hilton) stepped up to the penalty dot, and calmly scored his third goal of the season, tying the score at 1-1. All three of Simone's goals have come via penalty kicks this season.

Rochester took the lead back on a goal by Anurag Dwivedi in the 69th minute. Bryce Ikeda sent in a corner kick that Dwivedi got a head to, tallying his first goal of the season to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead. Rochester had put the RIT defense under tremendous pressure, firing four straight corner kicks in on Will Sokol (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville). The Yellowjackets broke through on the fourth attempt to take the lead.

The Tigers had a chance inside the final minute of regulation. Ben Frenett (Spencerport, NY/Allendale Columbia) fired a ball into the Rochester penalty area that Jared Short (Grafton, WI/Cedarburg) got a head to, directing a shot on target. Yellowjackets keeper Patrick Conway was there to make the save and preserve the win.

Shots were 12-7 in favor of Rochester, who fired seven corner kicks to one for the Tigers. Sokol took the loss in net for RIT, making five saves. Conway got the win, making four saves.

The Hillside Community Shield is a fundraiser aimed at supporting the youth and families served by Hillside through the game of soccer.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 15 when the Tigers host SUNY Oswego at 1 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
