ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (3-1-1) men's soccer team and SUNY Oswego (3-1-1) played to a 1-1 draw in non-conference action Saturday afternoon from warm and sunny Tiger Stadium. With the tie, the all-time series between RIT and Oswego is knotted at 11-11-2. It was the first meeting between the two schools since 2011.
Shots were 21-11 in favor of RIT. The Tigers fired eight corner kicks to two for the Lakers.
Will Sokol (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) made eight saves in net for RIT to earn the tie. Brian Terra made 10 stops in net for SUNY Oswego.
After a scoreless first half, RIT broke through with a goal in the 57th minute. Freshman
Alec Jackson (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) scored off assists from
Ben Frenett (Spencerport, NY/Allendale Columbia) and
Cam Shipley (Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili). Shipley began the play with a cross over to Frenett. He fed a ball into space in front of the Oswego penalty area. Jackson ran onto the ball, causing confusion between Terra and a Lakers defender. That allowed Jackson to poke a shot home to give RIT the lead.
Oswego State tied the score with a goal in the 62nd minute. Hassan Musa sent in a ball off a corner kick. Sokol got his hand to the initial shot, but the rebound came to Jason Siracuse from in close, and he deflected the shot in to tie the score at 1-1.
The Tigers had a golden chance early in the first overtime.
Dakota Kegler (Pavilion, NY/Pavilion) had a shot off a free kick that Terra saved. The rebound came to
Will Schiesswohl (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Township), but his shot went just wide of the net.
Caleb Asamoah got free for Oswego State in the second overtime. Sokol came off his line and was able to smother Asamoah's shot that was heading for the low corner.
Nate Verso (Souderton, PA/Souderton Area) had a shot in the dying seconds of the second overtime, but Terra was there to make the save to keep it a 1-1 final.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 18 when the Tigers play at Houghton College. Kick-off in Houghton, N.Y. is 7 p.m. It is the first meeting the two schools since 1984. The Tigers hold an 8-7-1 record all time versus the Highlanders.
